Oil pressure lamp

My 1995 Mitsubishi Galant has 153,000 + miles on the odometer. Two days ago while idling I noticed the oil pressure warning lamp illuminating dimly, as the RPMs increased it went away. The oil level was at the full mark and the car runs fine. The lamp has not illuminated since then. Does anyone have ideas about what could have caused the lamp to illuminate. An appointment was set with the dealer to check out the car. Thanks in advance.

If your engine is a 4G63, it probably has the problematic center thrust bearing oil squirter valve. If this valve gets a bit of crud in it, it will stay open on idle, resulting in low oil pressure. When the crud shifts, the valve closes, and oil pressure resumes.

I'd advise a) change the oil and filter, ask your dealer if flushing the engine lubrication system (not the cooling system) is advisable, and put in another new filter. b) check for bits of metal in the old oil (this is NOT good, and may indicate abnormal center main thrust bearing wear) c) have the dealer check for crank walk, just in case.

If you have a V6, just change the oil and filter.
