Valve cover seal melted, 89 4G63 DOHC

Hi

I replaced my valve cover seal (incl spark plug seals) on my 1989 galant

4G63 DOHC about a month ago as I noticed the seal was damaged. There was also a small amount of oil leaking from the left hand side of the cover.

I have been keeping an eye on it and the new seal has melted in the same place. (left hand front corner, opposite side of cambelt) I first started to notice a mark on the exhaust manifold cover where the seal has melted and dripped onto it.

Now i am losing more oil then ever from this corner.... Seemed like a waste of time changing the seal...

I have no other overheating problems that i know of (to cause the seal to melt) and the valve cover was not over tightened.

Why would this seal melt? Is it a bad seal?

Thanks for you help

there is no way an oem valve cover seal is melting. where have you been getting your parts? on a turbo car with no heat shields (like mine) there is no evidence of damage from heat. i've had leaks but on two different turbo 4g63 cars (120,000 and 80,000 miles.) no burnt or melting gaskets.

I went to the shop I bought it from today. They are going to send it back to the manufacture. Its not a genuine Mitsi part.

Talked to a few mechanics today, none of them had heard of one melting before.

Yeah, that's weird but if you have an exhaust leak in the manifold that is shooting hot exhaust on that area it wouldn't help.
