In article , snipped-for-privacy@timkemp.karoo.co.uk spouted forth into uk.rec.cars.modifications...

I had that steering wheel on the Favorit, in Red leather to match the Red Cobra Buckets. Feels a little weird at first. But it makes for very direct steering. I had those Pedal covers to.

It is a Simoni Racing X3 Comp. Same wheel used in 2 Fast 2 Furious, only I had mine about 3 months before it came out. Stunned the f*ck out of the little Saxo and Nova boys to see that in a Skoda with full rally buckets and custom footwell pods (with 5" Pioneer 3 ways), and a seriously solid 2x12mm thick stealth shelf with 7x10's. Made then seriously weirded out.

But it's a show car, so it's not really meant to be driven, heh. Merely kept in a garage and taken to shows.

Yeah, but.... gah, never mind - they've obviously OD'ed on acid, and that's all there is to it.

Isn't it from an Austin Allegro?...

Nah, for the price of that steering wheel, you could buy a whole fleet of Allegros.

A Nova will always be a Nova - not a Fast and the Furious Supra or a mad Jap styled Evo - at the end of the day its a Nova, nothing wrong with that - but the guy is trying to make it something its not.

Understood?

*I've* made it a show car Nova??? :-O

Come on Dervy... ultimate Shite Old Diesels - which would you recommend as something I could have as a backup vehicle, for under a grand.

The Fiesta is doing very well, but I would like PAS again, and still want to retain the cheap running costs / ease of maintenance, together with a bit more space.

Why not keep that Fiesta as a backup vehicle?

Or how about a 205 diesel?

Well yes, that is the alternative.

My old man has just picked up a really clean Montego TD estate on a K for £300... it may well become mine in the fullness of time.

Either way, I need something as a backup, for peace of mind if nowt else.

No ta!

You like your Austins, don't ya?!

Good idea.

I've never driven a 205, but I thought they were supposed to be pretty good - plus those engines (particularly the TD ones) are supposed to be pretty good. No personal experience though. Out of interest, what don't you like about them (besides the whole French thing!)?

I could wholeheartedly recommend the Mk5 TDi Fiestas though - they really are bloody superb. Don't be put off by my experience - I think what caused it could possibly have been the guy (mate of a mate) who did a bit of front panel straightening out (nothing major to look at, but went in a noticeable amount - yes I had a little knock that I may have not mentioned!) didn't properly fill the system up as the rad had to come out for the repair. I suspect there was an air lock in the cooling system, but it's very difficult to prove that it was that and not the fact that the thermostat just started to stick. FWIW I checked the coolant when I picked it up from him, and it was exactly the same level as before, and it stayed at that level for a good few days before it turned all gooey. Anyway, I'll just put it down to experience, and thank my lucky stars I've still got a NCB!

Anyway, about the Mk5 (or Mk4.5) Fiesta TDs - I recently drove a low-ish mileage Mk4 1.8D (back delivering pizzas for one night the other week) and really noticed the difference between the two engines. I didn't think that I would have noticed quite so much difference (especially in performance), but the TDi was a *lot* smoother, torquey and nicer to drive. And the steering wheel in the Mk4 (S reg) compared to mine felt bloody massive, and a lot thinner.

Anyway, I could highly recommend them, and you can pick them up for just over £2k. I do remember you saying you found them cramped though.

In that case, there's only one true way:

Hindustan Ambassador Diesel ;-)

My dad used to have a 405 1.9D, was slow off the mark yes, but once it got going it was ok, perfectly capable of getting over the ton, and he got over

600 miles out of tank (about 65mpg)...

Maybe a 405 estate?
