ABS is now mandatory

"From next month, all new cars sold in Europe must have ABS as standard. While most models already come with the safety feature, some - such as Fiat's entry-level Panda - do not. And buyers are being warned about ordering a non-ABS car before the legislation is introduced, as resale values are likely to be seriously affected.

However, small-volume models - built at a rate of less than 500 per year - are exempt, so firms such as TVR are not affected"

It's about time !

Why?

If I want ABS, I'll order ABS. As it is, I don't, so don't see why I should have it enforced by some fat-cat Euro MP.

So that can manage to avoid you (with the help of the ABS), instead of smacking into your car after hurtling towards you with all four wheels locked, carrying an amusing look of bewilderment on their face !

But *I* want you to have ABS ! See above :)

Because it saves lives (including mine and yours). Compulsory safety is a good idea.

Bollocks - there are too many bloody people around as it is. I say install random brakes, exploding steering wheels and a mandatory 90mph minimum speed limit on all roads.

If is that damned incompetant, then he/ she shouldn't be on the road, simple as that. People managed to not hit each other in the pre-ABS days, so why should they be more likely to now?

*I* don't have ABS, and I don't want some idiot telling me I need it retro fitted or be forced to scrap my car. Which is a possible next step the more the regulations take over.

Compulsory being responsible for your own f*ck ups is a good idea, not having nanny wrap you up and protect you from the world till you die at 157 having never tasted a burger, had a hot bath, or felt the tyres scrabble on a corner.

May I suggest a very simple device to make people drive a lot more carefully?.. a sharp spike protruding out of the centre of the steering wheel.

Been saying this for years. Preferrably tungsten steel. Made out of hex bar - cos it looks angrier when it's sharpened.

Can't argue with this around town, but would wonder how the accident statistics might change...

Not forgeting the barbs, to prevent it sliding off of the chest area too easily.

Whilst obviously a tongue in cheek suggestion, it does beg the question that if drivers feel almost invulnerable cocooned inside their little tin boxes surrounded by safety devices, does it actually encourage them to drive more recklessly?

Erm, the Lotus Elise has had ABS for a long time.

Sheesh, the later lardier ones probably have... looks like I need a better example..

How about....

McLaren F1, Ferrari F40 / F50....

Ah, bollocks to it, my Sierra hasn't got ABS, so the rest of ya can f*ck off with yer trendy pulsating brake pedals...

... oh, the Merc has got ABS.. now I'm really knackered...

Not quite as trivial to remove all the various bits of the system from the car and save the weight that they add.
