ANOTHER new car for me to try out

Well I know I've waffled on about being "invited to leave" the Jag showroom back in 1998.

But I was /cough/ "forcefully ejected" from the Lotus place the next weekend! :)

So ?

But when an average petrol engine doesn't sound anything like any of the above EITHER, then your point is moot !

Anyhow, who gives a crap about engine sound ? I want my car to get me places quickly and comfortably. The less noise I hear when driving it, the better !

Yup, that's EXACTLY what we should be doing.

I can't think of ANY large saloons, with 200bhp, with low mileage, and in immaculate condition, under five years old, that can be had for three thousand quid.

I fail to see how the TI is a "steaming pile of s**te". There is NOTHING to touch it for the money - otherwise I wouldn't have bought one !

Absolute tosh.

As an OWNER, I can tell you my TI handles it's power just fine. Mine's tweaked a little too, so I'm making more torque than standard, AND I'm running budget tyres.

"Sloppy handling" ? Eh ?

Er, and what do you think the TI is ? Is it not a "fast mid-range exec" ?

And it bloody-well ought to be, at two to three times the price !!

Why are you comparing apples with oranges ?

I bought my TI about a year ago. I was not concerned with insurance, running costs, or anything else. I had a completely open mind - I just wanted a big modern car, that was quick, for reasonable money. If the TI wasn't the best, I wouldn't have bought it. It certainly wasn't convienient - the rarity meant I had to travel 100 miles to buy my Silver one !

Precisely what I was thinking !

Steve seems to have forgot, that the very best TIs around are worth four grand at the most.

If you've got 20K to spend on a car, you're not gonna drive a Rover FFS !

Hopefully not. To me, the whole "sound thing" is moot - the last thing you want is loads of engine noise inside the car !

Right, then it's completely outclassed.

Ahhh, the shiny new-ish car syndrome.

Personally, I'd buy a mint E30 325i in preference. Or an E34 525i. Same sort of money, but a bit older, and vastly more capable.

As a hint. The 620Ti is cheap for a reason. It's s**te.

I travelled more than that just to look at a car and not buy it. Heck, I travelled about 400 miles to buy a Fiesta van (via Easyjet).

Call me mad? You will one day.

But I was going on about the 1.8TDCI - hold on, I think you're mentioning both. Ah. Got ya.

That sounds more the ticket.

Yours for £800 once it hits 250k. Interested? :-)

How long do I have to save up?

But, yes.

/transplant time . . . maybe/

Just clocked over 133k today. I was tempted to say a grand, but knowing you lot I'd just get a load of abuse, so I said £800. Sounds a lot cheaper!!

When I'm done with it I may well chuck it on ebay, though part of me wants to just see what stupidly high mileage I can get out of it before it needs a rebuild (I'd like to think 400k!!).

Thing is, I've got a dilemna - to sell it at the moment I'd probably struggle to get £2k for it (looking in Autotrader at similar models with lower mileages), but I reckon I could quite easily get another 100k out of it, and then flog it for a grand (or just under if I'm feeling generous). All depends on if and when the right Audi turns up!

Well my 400 was just going there, plus another 400 coming back. Bracknell to Glasgow and back. Left the house at 4:30am and walked into the bank in Glasgow at 8:30am. Not bad going methinks. Also, as a bonus, the bank had recently changed its opening time to 8:30am on a Friday. Good thing, Easyjet..

Yeah I think so, but I didn't pay much attention . . . :)

By what ?

406 V6 isn't as good. There is no comparable Vectra. Comparable Mondeo is plenty more cash (ST220), and I'd still rather have the TI. There is no comparable Laguna. The SAABs aren't as quick, apart from the big-money Vigglens (spelling). The comparable Volvos are plenty more cash. Should I continue ?

Precisely !

Nope - it's cheap because people THINK it's s**te. If it actually was, then I wouldn't have bought one !

Howdy folks just thought id pop in my pennies worth on this debate, Today little johnnny no name in his golf GTI Mk4 laid the bate for a race so there was me in my astra (god love her) i sat 3 foot off his tail and never moved / lost ground from the start of our games at 50 mph on a county road to 95 mph why didnt i over take ?? well i was in

5th and didnt want to loose it on the bends, what i must say for deisel machine is this i went deisel for 2 reasons but now have more and wont go back to petrol.

My rev / torque range may be low but remeber i dont have 6 k RPM to get through before my power band, if your a good driver it doesnt matter what you drive you will hit the power range with every shift sweet as a nut.

Its deisel its bullet proof chuck it abuse it loves it, 400 k miles no problem (seen on a vectra) same engine as mine. its cheap to insure when your 22 yr old it all helps, mate had a DTI vectra went to work every day at 85 mph never got pulled he got him self a sri 180 vectra got pulled 2 days in a row (first time he went to work) so he now has

6 points and a car he cant dare take over the limit ... rather have the DTI cops assume your just a rep doing a job and if your driving saely they dont bother you.

So about those so called pocket rockes that wont last 50 k thrashing (VTS / VTR / TYPE Rs ) Id stick to my DTI astra any day.

Plus Bio deisel coming to teeside ... more savings or a fill up of cooking oil from asda also does the trick

You sat 3' off his bumper at speeds from 50-95mph? You, sir, are a prick.
