Hmmmm, supercar is a bit optimistic! How about an M5? Proper engine with the right wheels being driven :)

None are Supercars.

But what do you want? 4WD or FWD Turbo, or high revving fun buzz box? On a budget or spend a little more for luxury? New or Used?

The Audi will have a turbo, 4wd, fantastic spec options and german reliability but for a price. The Skoda has a good equipment level, not quite so good a finish, but solid, and similar reliability. Not so many bolt on bits than the Honda, but the serious tuners can get good potential from it. Civic. Fashionable, nickable, great performance if you wring it's neck as it should be driven, part of the ricer racer culture, so be prepared for an almost worse stigma than Skoda used to have. Nice cars though, but used ones hold their prices better than the used vRS.

Best balance is the Octavia, best image is the S4 best handling and fun on the road probably the Honda, but the Audi will be close but bigger and weightier.

you aren't really comparing similar cars.

If you really do want to be looking reliable supercars, much as I hate to say it, look at the far east.

Scooby, Evo, Skyline, and Supra or MR2 depending on what your after, keep it standard at a couple of hundred BHP or more and enjoy fast reliability, or tune the balls off it, get into real supercar power, but be prepared for things to break.

Or for a different euro angle, find a late model Saab 9000 Aero. get one with god history and totally unmolested. You can keep it standard and

225BHP with traction and an LSD, or tune the balls and take it upto 450 +bhp with the help of lots of pennies to Maptun.

I bought a Celica GT4, it's fun, but they are getting old now, and it doesn't feel as quick and on the edge as my old Saab 900 turbo.

Civic R if you need a hatch, MX5 / MR2, Celica if you want a coupe, new toyota engined Elise if 30k is cheap to you.

Oh, and completely off-the-wall a BMW 120d...

Cheaper, faster, better built.

Pick any two. That's the best you can expect.

A car mag (Autocar?) did a thing on most fun car to drive recently. Under £5000 1st MX5, 2nd Pug GTI-6 and 3rd 200SX. Fastest, 200SX will piss on the other two for top speed (145mph is closest to supercar speeds). As you said reliable that excludes all french cars. So you would need to decide 2 seats only or space for some kids? Dunno what got placed in higher price brackets if you really meant cheapest NEW car.

I remember seeing, I think it was, an old 5th gear with Tiff and a=20 touring car driver, and a rally driver, and a real gaggle of cars. Scoob, Evo, Supra, 3000GT, Skyline, Porsche 911, Golf GTi, Audi TT and a=20 humble 106 GTi.

And while it won no particular category, by the time you had combined=20 all the caregory scores on all the cars, the 106 GTi came out top as the=20 very best ever, ultimate drivers car. Says something doesn't it.

You cant really put those 3 cars in the same category, A Skoda VRS is a 1.8T with 2wd the Honda is a NA 2.0 classed as a hot hatch, the Audi S4 is either a 2.7 Twin Turbo 4wd monster which can see 450bhp by just chipping it, or its a 4.2 - 40valve V8 with 350bhp standard.

The S4 is in a totally different class to the other 2, although they are all reliable in a sense, the s4 will cost more to repair obviously.

What are you after ? What's your budget ?

200bhp ? 300bhp ? £10,000 ? £20,000 ?

Hot-hatch, small, large ?

Look at a Cooper S Works (stupidly over priced). Civic is great - engine is shit. Audi S4 is excellent, but pricey. Skoda vRS is nice, but Leon Cupra R is nicer, as is the Audi S3 (but pricey again). Astra Coupe Turbo is still around new. Nice, cheap, and 240bhp with a chip. New Astra VXR is due soon, and is expected to be excellent.

260bhp from the Mazda 6 4x4 Turbo, also due soon, and I suspect it'll also be excellent - this would be my choice if I had money to burn. Scooby WRX STi are very keenly priced - can be had for £18K from a car supermarket, and the same applies to the Clio 182 Cup (although it's not that quick) at £11K. BMW 330d has a *lovely* engine, and can easily be fettled to 230bhp-ish. They're a good buy used.

And the list goes on !

Or a 2.2 litre 5-cylinder turbocharged "executive rocket-ship" with 230bhp.

Hmmm - bit dull.

Niiice - good choice - solid reliable, fast, comfy etc

I like em, many other posts will say everything else :)

Well, a supercar, none of them :)

They are good tho - just S not Works is still fast and nice (and chippable...)

Its not shit, its not to your liking.

Agreed

All that is acceptable - 182 Cup probly the most fun.

They're fappin' expensive tho.

in news: snipped-for-privacy@news.individual.net, Sleeker GT Phwoar slurred :

Dunno if it's the same thing, but therer was an old top-gear thing, also released on video, with Clarkson, Tim Harvey and Richard Burns. The 106 came ahead of the Ferarri 550, IIRC, but then Clarkson put the Ferarri in

1st place, on the basis that 'A french shopping trolley can't be the worlds best handling car' :-)

That was true 10 to 15 years ago and if you discount Porsche's as supercars.

Things have changed for the better: the more recent Ferraris don't break down near Paris when you drive them from Brussels to Cannes. Nor do Porsches, Lamborghinis, etc. Even Lotus has grown up.

Buy a TVR however and you will get an education in stamina-building. Maybe the Russians will make them more reliable.

Is Marcos out of business?

£3k on a cosworth and the rest on modifications and he would have a faster car than any of the others mentioned
