"Classic" Rallying

Well I'm thinking old Skodas as they did well in there day, should not be too hard to work on and I guess there will be a few about still? Relatively cheap? NeedforSwede2 can you comment on say using a 130 rapid? Dose anyone compete in that class?

Ebay is your best bet. A 136 would probably be a better idea than a 130 (136 had the 8 port=20 alloy heads that would run unleaded, the 130 was an irojn head 5 port=20 engine that needed lead petrol). If you can't find a 136 rapid look for a cheap Favorit, and any Estelle=20 or Rapid (130 Estelles had the best interior of the Estelles) and blag=20 the parts needed to convert (some say you need the sump and oil pickup,=20 you will need manifolds).

120 Estelles came in 4 and 5 speed and either swing axle or semi=20 trailing arms. 130 Estelles and all Rapids came with Semi trailing arms.

There are twincarb conversions for Weber/Dellortos (mainly manifolds). Or either and jet the Standard Estelle/Rapid twin choke Jikov carb, fit=20 a Favorit Jikov (licensed Pierburg) twin choke and get the advantage of=20 an auto choke. It is a straight bolt on if you use the original spacers=20 etc. Also Ford DGAV and DGAS Carbs from 1.6-3.0 Capri/Cortina/Granada/Early=20 Sierras fit the same bolt pattern. You will need to rejet and you will=20 need to open out the standard manifold. But it works and will probably=20 be cheaper than an intake manifold and DCOE/DHLA conversion. DGAV are=20 sequential twin choke (small choke opens first for economy, then both=20 open and kick you in the back). DGAS carbs dump both barrels at once in=20 parallel. Lousier economy, less low end, all up top with the revs.

130/135/136 models used 4 pot Calipers and are very good. Also pads from=20 Metros fit so you get all the Mintex performance grades. 120 and 105=20 models only got twin pots and pad choice is available, but not great. 120 swing arm models need a special puller to remove the rear brake=20 drum, all swing axle models don't need anything special. The shoes are=20 the same, and mintex performance ones are avialable Goodrich still make=20 hoses.

John Shelley is a Skoda God. He owns one of Haugland's old 130LR's from=20 the Ulster rally. He works and lives in CZ, so he is getting it restored=20 as while trhe engine is pukka, the extra lightened, unrustproofed body=20 is looking rough, and the barum race tyres are starting to get a bit=20 threadbare.

He can source manifolds, better discs/calipers, hydraulic handbrake/rear=20 disc conversions (although you lose the cable brake might be an MOT=20 problem) and group B style bigger bore longer length free flowing cross=20 over exhausts. It is worth the =A310.50 a year to join the Skoda club. You get to find=20 out where the meets are, and when John is going to be over in the UK, as=20 you ask him to get you stuff, meet him at one event, give him the money,=20 and then get it off him at the next. He also posts on the owners club=20 forums. He knows most of the suppliers in CZ (used to be the supply=20 factories for Skoda Motorsport Pre-VAG, now they make limited run=20 enthusiast stuff).

I beleive

They aren't as popular now rallying as they used to be (Favorits and Felicias are cheap enough), but they have their fans who rally for fun rather than to win.
