As a child, I think I was more impressed by, and interested in, the noise :-)

Indeed, I remember well standing on Durham station when a Deltic pulled a northbound express through on full noise. Closely followed by a pair of class 37s hauling a southbound freight. A memory well worth freezing for.
Interesting trivia point - the Deltic and class 37 shared a common bogie design...
