Diesel rev counter

The post about the Fiesta rev counter got me thinking, How is one done on a diesel engine? Just wondering what it might take to fit one to my Montego TD.

For marine diesels it is (often) done using a mechanical knock sensor. No electrical bits at all, just detection of the shaking of the engine on its mounts.
