Hall sensor on the flywheel on my old 405.

There's a pulse feed off the alternator.
For marine diesels it is (often) done using a mechanical knock sensor. No electrical bits at all, just detection of the shaking of the engine on its mounts.
So the same as on a Rover 800 then?
