FAO SteveH or anyone who can help!

I could be wrong of course, and it could explain why they don't work so well, the system is essentially Magnetti, but if they decided to use other parts in the system, it explains a lot. However, IIRC we never replaced a MAF sensor in the 6 years I worked at Coupers.

OTOH it doesn't really surprise me, Fiat, as the parent company, purchase components from whoever can manufacture them to the price they want to pay, rather than to meet a specification (and I do know this for a fact) - as do quite a lot of other struggling (and deceased) marques.

Probably need to go out without SWMBO in the car more often! ;-)

Chance would be a fine thing. It's her baby, that one.

And no-one recommended to replace the stub axle? Unbelievable.

SteveH ( snipped-for-privacy@italiancar.co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Does it have any in?

They're the same crappy calipers as on the Lancia Dedra Turbo and several other Fiat Group cars like the Tipo Sedicivalvole, Coupe...

The handbrake mechanism on them just seizes solid for no apparent reason. If you try to drive off with the handbrake on does the car lean to one side?

Long story. It was my first venture into contracting, I had a 'mate' who was 'my mechanic'. He was a mong. He just kept replacing the bearings and scratching his head. The first time it happened (doing 80 on the M40), the RAC Patrol guy said 'I knew you were around this corner because I saw your skid mark start about 300 yards further up'.

:)

Beginning to realise.

I'm gonna leave it to the experts, that's what a warranty is for.

Not an import.

There's no rattle, the engine sounds sweet as a nut!

Great. I'm really not qualified to do this kind of stuff, so it'll be off the garage I think. Problem is, I don't trust Mangoletsi to do all the cleaning and greasing you mention, I think they generally just do the minimum they can get away with.

Crikey.

Ok, I'll pass those instructions on.

It doesn't use any oil! The car isn't used a lot to be honest, only on 38000 now. Done about 8000 a year since having it. I checked the oil last night, and it was 3/4 full.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

Hmm, never tried that. Not heard from SWMBO yet, but I assume she's got to Birmingham ok. I'm going to try and get the car booked in next week.

Thanks

D'oh! You live and learn anyway!

When I had my Mk2 Astra van, one wheel bearing went on that - took out the front strut myself (all fairly easy unbolting stuff), and took it to a bloke with a press to press the bits out. He pointed out that the hub had quite a lip on it, and would want replacing. Phone up Carquip (Vauxhall used parts place), who did one for about £10 delivered, all sorted. Then the noise continued, so I had to do the other bearing. Eventually I'd done all 4 in the time I had it :-(

LOL. I think I spent more on that Escort than it was actually worth. Eventually, the turbo went on it, the mechanic took it to bits and somehow fixed one of the vanes that had snapped. But he warned it wouldn't last much longer, so I flogged it!

Peak Alfa in Hope come highly recommended. If you can find it :D

Bosch MAF on my 146TS. Agree that the ICV could be causing problems though.

Thanks for the recommendation Delgardo. The only reason I've not thought about using them is because I didn't know where they were! I now see that they are kind of halfway over Snakes Pass, which is about 40 miles each way from me. I'll try Alfa Aid in St Helens first I think.

Thanks

Correction: Alfa Tune in St Helens :)

Alfa Tech, you mean.

Alfa Aid are a slightly questionable specialist in Maidenhead - great for parts but I'd never let them near my car or buy one from them.

Alfa Tune, you said earlier. And there's an Alfatune in St Helens, but no Alfa Tech according to

I'd heard of them, that's where my confusion came from.

Fuck, aye, that's what I meant.

Yes, it seems so.

We did loads of those, but no MAFs at all.

Be careful, extended warranties don't always cover this kind of repair, and often question multiple items replaced.

[Snipped Text]

Mangoletsi? Definitely a no no.

Amongst other things, yes.

[Snipped Text]

38k, righto, plan for a cambelt and water pump replacement at 48k then, these *never* make it to 72k.

S'OK. :-)
