I have fleet issues - long and really very boring post.

Due to the unique way in which my motoring habit is funded, I have advance warning of a couple of vehicles which will be for sale in the next couple of months.

Eldest brother (he who had the 750i (now sold) is getting a new Golf TSI around July or thereabouts - whenever it's ready. In the interim, he bought himself a MKIII Golf GTI to smoke around in - which his daughter has subsequently purloined from underneath him whilst she's home from the USA for the summer. Being carless, he went out and bought himself a 51 Reg Alfa 156 Sportwagon

1.8 Veloce.

Still with me ?

Good.

When the new Golf appears, one of the above will be spare and will as a matter of course be offered to me - very kindly I must emphasise - for bottom money.

To make it more complicated we currently have the my A4 and SWMBO has her Ibiza 1.4 which she's had since 2002. One or more of these could be sold to make way for one or more of the above.

So, of the following 4 potential vehicles, which 2 would you choose to have.

'96 P reg Audi A4 B5 1.6

51 Reg Alfa Romeo 156 1.8 TS Sportwagon Veloce '96 P reg VW Golf GTI 8 Valve 5 door. 2000 W reg Seat Ibiza 1.4

I also have the Sylva, but that isn't even remotely part of this discussion :-)

Which two are we having ?

At some point during the proceedings I'd like to do a back to back comparison and see if a B5 really can surprise hot hatch drivers.

Anyway, by the time this comes along you'll probably have changed your mind and gotten something else anyway. (c:

The Audi is dull but probably eminently capable of doint its duties. Stay away from the Alfa if you want reliable and well built. P reg golfs are a bit long in the tooth now. Is it still unrattly and brisk? [1] The Aye, Pizza is a stalwart. Any reason to get rid? It does certainly say beep when its low on fuel. What does Mrs Sherunckle say?

True

But, almost predictably, the one most likely to raise a laugh.

On a good day...

Very much so. Obviously, it doesn't enjoy slush moulded interior fittings, but you can't have everything.

She know that the Piazza will eventually go some day, but it certainly is a stalwart.

Today, I vote A4 and Golf. Tonight, might be A4 and 156, or Golf and 156, or 156 and Ibiza, or maybe Golf and Ibiza ?

WWSHD ?

(What would SteveH do....)

B5/156/B5/156/B5/156.....

Depends what those hot hatch drivers were expecting. Sort of like a JD Power survey, except unique to relative performance/handling capabilities.

Heh, both have non-optimal engine choices.

If it were a 1.8T in the B5, I'd have that, if it were the 2.0 in the

156, I'd have that.

Tricky decision - 156s with the 1.8 engine often came in quite poor and bizarre trim.

More details on the 156 would help.

Silver Sportwagon Veloce Leather.

That's as much as I know right now.

So does Veloce mean "it's sort of the same spec as other Veloces, but in reality different cars had whatever parts chucked in we had lying around at the time, or extra stuff chucked in to sweeten a deal if that particular car wasn't shifting" ?

Veloces are usually pretty standardised.

It was the non-Veloces, especially 2lt cars, which were a bit odd - as they could essentially be built to order.

Ahhh, that'll be quite nice, then.

Didn't see the Veloce bit.

Same spec. as ours, but we have the 2.0 with facelift dash.

Do it, you'll only regret it at some point in the future if you don't.

Genuine question: If he gets it, in the future, do you think there'll be a moment when he says to himself "I wish I'd got a Sillyspeed"?

Reply to

Heh, probably not....

Have to say that the novelty of Sillyspeed hasn't worn off yet, though.

Genuine answer.

Probably - I've heard all of the stories, but if you need someone to ignore good advice and just go for it, then I'm your man.

Besides which, I have just bought one of these for the Sylva.

Crucially, it has an ignition kill input, so as the website says. "Potential uses include shift kill to kill ignitions during upshift, allowing for clutchless shifts."

Along with the paddles that big Andy cut for me on the wterjet, that's my flappy paddle needs taken care of.
