I'll never live this down....

But, I think I need a diesel.

As usual, I'm being a tight fisted Northerner, so I may well be asking the impossible.

Budget £2k. Prefer a saloon rather than hatch, and almost definitely not an estate. Must have climate, or, at a real push, normal aircon. Must have something that resembles some sort of pace - so no Primula diesels..... (shame, really, 'cos they tick all the boxes, but are slower than a very slow thing).

Over to the jury......

I'd suggest a turbo-diesel ;-)

Thank you. You win tonight's award for stating the bleeding obvious.

Hahahahaha

Pug 406 2.1TD, maybe HDi if you're really lucky BMW 325TD Vauxhall Omega TD VW Gold TDi

Don't. For £2k you'll only get the I6 2.5TD, and whilst they're a great engine, they are so *not* economical you'd be shocked.

They rust, too. I've seen a 1998 R Omega estate which made me feel a whole lot better about the Scorpio.

147K miles, Auto 2.0i 16v, £995.

do you have to spend 2k?

why not buy a nice 405 derv :)

Oxymoron alert.

That's not fair, Rob's been alright lately...

Anyway: What about Skoda Octavias? They seem to get bandied about a lot. Or of course, Passat TDi? Or older Audi A4 TDi?

Richard

Yes to Octavia, but I'd only get a high miles one for the money.

No to a Passat - high miles and only 'S' spec with no aircon for £2k.

A4 - maybe, but it will be old (like N plate) and high miles for that money.

Fiat Marea diesel?

Fiat Marea 5 pot turbo diesel - 130 bhp and oodles of torque. And you know how nicely Mareas drive already.

Many of them are Weekend models but you should find a saloon.

Heh, yes, that's one I have considered.

But only if I can find a JTD130 with climate.

The older TD125 wasn't all that economical and the lower powered JTDs don't come in HLX spec.

You can chip it to 195 bhp as well...

Yes, there's only one kicking around Autotrader at anything vaguely looking like a sensible price. I mean, who the *f*ck* pays £3k for a 5 year old Marea?

Which would defeat the point of me buying a diesel.

I went to look at one off ebay - looked good in the photos but had rust all along the top of the windscreen, the interior was tatty, the odo backlight was dicky and it had a sticky handbrake mechanism (I see they've still not ironed that problem out from early 90s Dedra...) Went for over 2k in the end.

However there was a tidier one on Autotrader for under =A31k but the guy selling it couldn't come up with a convenient time for me to view it so I told him to forget it.

They do drive well and there seems to be zero turbo lag. Very refined on A roads and motorway but round town they do sound agricultural.

Which brings me onto... what about a 620 TDi great engine in those - you might even find a "new shape" 420 TDi with the same engine for better performance due to lighter weight.

What about LPG?

Otherwise I've seen plenty of Audi A4s with diesel engines around that price.

Unusual to see a rusty one. Mine certainly isn't. Tatty interiors aren't all that uncommon - the seat material is really nasty and cheap quality. I've had issues with the handbrake in really cold weather - you soon learn to leave it off when there's a risk of frost.

Under £1k would be a TD125 HLX. They're quite thirsty compared with the newer JTD lump.

That'll be a TD125, then.

Rust, rust and more rust. Plus, I don't like either of 'em.

I have thought about that - but LPG filling stations are rare around here.... could be tempted, though. What sort of cost is it for an LPG conversion? (Oh, and I'd still be doing without climate)

Old and high miles.... N plate, 140k miles is about par for £2k worth of A4.

Whereas, I can get a 2000 plate 406 for that kind of cash.....

I'd rather walk. And if they're the 90bhp HDi, it'd be quicker too. I'd swear the HDi was the slowest car I have ever driven. And I've driven a

1.6 Aircooled VW Type 1 camper.

How much does LPG cost where you live?
