I think the sushi is going to my head. Thinking of ricing it up,

What are opinions of the 5th gen Civic (91-96) VTEC 1.6? Considering it as a cheap plaything. Yes I know it isn't a hotrod, but tuning parts are popular and therefore cheap and plentiful. It doesn't need to be tacky ricer to actually handle well and be quick. SOT will be kept minimal. Anyone recently had an early to mid 90's Honda care to pass an opinion.

saw a type R today, i know i know bit pricey as a play thing still just it had a nice exhaust and it gave me the horn a lil bit when the vtec kicked in as it buggered off :) vtec anything with a decent exhaust whacked on is BUY BUY BUY to me :)

Can't help thinking Hondata or megasquirt ecu with a set of bigger injectors and an ebay supercharger from a Mini Cooper S would be quite grunty when matched with a decent intake and exhaust system.

Miss our old Civic Dx

1400 on twin carbs

lush sound :) handled well went alrite for what it was and was cheap as chips

Forget the injectors ditch them for a big set of carbs before the charger, the M45 is more than happy to suck fuel through it.

twin carbs as std i believe... but not as we know it jim

Reliable and uninspiring. From a hotrod to a civic. Hang your head in shame.

indeed they were until the standard(mikumi i believe) carbs and manifold were binned for s et of dellorto downdraught 40's now that was somewhat interesting :)

Is that a joke? Do it properly put E-manage on it, intercool it and with a charger. MUCH MUCH more power this way, carbs are totally out of their leauge on a suck through system.

No it's how it's done on classic minis, read up on it I recommend A Graham Bell's Forced induction performance and tuning. The petrol helps lubricate the screws, provides a better seal and more boost so you actually get more power like this.

The other thing I forgot to mention is that the M45 doesn't boot that well low down. There were some power graphs of a G40 with the conversion before and after and at 2000rpm the eaton charger was over 90lb/ft down on the 40mm G-laden with the eaton overtaking it at about 3500rpm, the eaton's torque and power come on more slowly and smoothly without the same surge of a G-laden (but you probably wouldn't want a G-laden charger because of the cost £300-400 on ebay normally compared to £75-150 for an M45). If you want to be revving it the G-laden tends to drop off boost more quickly after it's peak than the eaton will as well. One last thing to remember is that with the new engine in the cooper being a turbo and that you can now get the works from the factory (so no charger is being removed) the supply of chargers on ebay will drop off at some point so if you are going to do it do it soon.

I can look out the power graphs of the before and after M45'd G40.

Reliable, uninspiring, but tunable. That is the important thing. Look at the stock WRX. Again reliable, quickish, but needs lots spending the be fantastically fast as you well know.

As long as I don't spend all the spare cash I have on neons, 19's and

1/2 a tonne of plastic and filler, and dedicate it to decent engine bay, suspension, brakes, and interior changes, it should be a quick but unassuming motorcar that the police won't look twice at.

Not really. Boost increase, exhaust and a decent intercooler will put you in the 13 second zone in a Rex. It would take quadruple that in a Honda.

You can turn a Civic into a sleeper. But if you have the cash to blow why not spend it on the Saab?

The cash I blow will be what I get for the Saab. I reckon, even if I have to wait until March, I should get arround =A32-

2400. An EG6 of arround 92-94 age seems to go for arround =A31500. Thats=20 =A31k to play with to start with. More when I save in fuel, and insurance= =20 at least intitially while it is still unmodified.=20 And I hate to say it, but I much prefer the more modern feel of a jap=20 car over a Saab of a similar age.

It will be that before you fiddle about with it. Generally bulletproof, tough engines (providing you check the oil of course, but that goes without saying). Won't be thirsty, pre-modification, either.

Hmm. What's this talk of a hotrod?

The sportier models do this much reasonably well as standard.

So no 18s, neons and huge wings then?

Late 1990s? :) My ex, ex boss had a string of Hondas. Loved every one of them in different ways but the 4WS Prelude was his firm favourite.

Are you sure - really sure - that you don't have space for two cars ? (plus hers).

Why have a solitary car that isn't exactly what you want and will always dissatisfy you in some way ?

Said it before and I'll say it again. A cheap reliable daily driver allows funds for a no compromises toy. In your case a hot rod, in my case another Locost (again). I've just spent an afternoon spannering on the Audi, and now it's mechanically very fit indeed. That means I can forget about it and concentrate on the Locost - safe in the knowledge that I have transport.

Mine two. Would love a VTEC gen 4 Prelude, or a Teg-R, but good uk Prelude VTECs=20 cost much more than shady imports but aren't as well specced, and Teg-Rs=20 never seem to lose their value, or are terminally messed with.

And I imagine the insurance for a teg-R would be stupid compared to a UK=20 civic. I know when I was looking at an import prelude, it worked out=20 that import lude was about =A3200 dearer than a UK GT4. Stupid really,=20

200BHP turbo 4x4 rally based car cheaper to insure than 4WS 175bhp 2wd=20 coupe with no competition history, and very little interest from the=20 numpties.

Nope, no real room unless the second car is a Smart or a Fart 126 etc. And I can't see either of them being much fun after the intitial "wow I can park in the wheeliebin" phase is over.

In news: snipped-for-privacy@news.individual.net, NeedforSwede2 wrote something quite bizarre, possibly in an effort to confuddle the world. It went like so;

Insewerance companies are mad like that.

One of the reasons I bought the Cosworth was the renewal for my RS2000 Mk5 had just come through and it'd jumped from £800fc to £1750fc even though I'd had no bumps / points etc and I had 3 yrs ncb. Just for a laugh I asked the girl how much to insewer a Cossie and she said "£768, fc".

So I sold the RS2000 that day, and bought a Cosworth instead.
