How much do you have to spend on a Passat to not get understeer, or to get six or eight cylinders, or voice control or over 300 bhp, or a quiet diesel, or alcantara interior...

Erm.

That's a bloody stupid comparison - if you're going to load up a 3 or a C class with that kind of power and kit, you may as well buy something from the lower reaches of the next class up.

Exactly the point, and the reason I bought a 03 plate E class instead of a new Passat. It'll be just as reliable, probably worth more in 3-5 years, faster, better to drive and more spacious. The only thing the Passat has on it is economy - mid 30s is what I'm expecting.

But you're buying your own car. Which makes a difference. Even if I did take a cash option, a 3-year old E-class wouldn't be considered acceptable by my employers.

To be honest, even if it was acceptable, I'd probably buy a 2 year old Passat or 159 for under £10k.

Oh pikey. Very pikey. Even my old Saab has auxiliary steering wheel controls.

By design or because it's easier that way?

Yes, because people like to move the seat whilst driving along and nobody but nobody adjusts the volume, track or station...

I don't buy the "acceptable car" tosh from any employer. I'd change employer.

Must admit, I find some of the employer's conditions a bit odd. If you take an allowance you should be able to run what you want, with maybe practicality (security, storage and safety) and condition requirements.

It's a damn site better than the recent trend of discussions revolving around hair styling products...

I'm not actually - if I was that bothered about the tragic loss of stuff like leccy sunroof, I'd just sell it and buy something that had it?

And come to think of it, the other two have it anyway, but it certainly wasn't why they were bought - it just happened to be there.

What I have spent money on is audio... but I don't feel the need to argue the toss about how good / bad that is compared to anyone elses.

No, FWIW, I just think you're all looking more anal that normal (1), with the current 'but my car has this toy' blah blah bollocks.

(1) Difficult to believe, I know

To be fair, I thought *all* cars had stalk controls these days.

Pretty sure I haven't adjusted my seat since I got the car heh. Conveniently the only other person that drives it likes the seat in the same place as me, which is handy. I can see those memory seat doobries been handy if you share a car with someone else mind.

I'm a pikey, and therefore don't spend enough time in and around newer stuff to know... thank f*ck.

Yes. I have that too. And yes, electrical adjustable seats is handy, but, once the seat is repositioned or set, it's set. The ICE, that's something else...
