MK2 Golf Speakers

I need some new speakers for my Golf. And they go in the dash, IIRC they're

10cm. Anyone know of any that sound decent and don't cost a shitload? Not really after door pods, they take away useful storage bins and make it obvious that you've got some half decent stereo gear in there.

VW themselves did speaker pods that fit where the little storage tray is in the door bin. The one that opens, not the big bin.

Kenwood used to do the best 10cm dash speakers for the Golf, but they were around £40 and didn't sound wonderful. The Golf needs custom-fit jobs for the dash really, they're a tw@ to fit, and never sound wonderful. The door pods are the best way to go, and loads of old Golfs in scrappys have them (they look standard)

Aye. I've seen them, but they cost £20 and I like those hatchy door bin things. Mind yew, I've just looked up Golf speakers - 87mm. There's not going to be a great sound coming out of them no matter what you spend on em, so perhaps I'd do better dropping 10-20 quid on a set of grilles and fitting relatively cheap bigger speakers. Any idea what size goes behind the door grilles - I'd guess around 15cm?

17cm I think.

Hmm. A bloke selling them reckons 5 1/4 inch. But I can get them cheaper from the VW parts desk. Anyway, once I've got them, I can see what'll fit. Could get cheapo components...

When you get 'em, tell me what they are because I'm hot on the tail of a nice Mk2 GTi..

I've been investigating Mk2 Golf stereo alternatives the last couple of days, well, ever since I discovered that switching on the sidelights was blowing a fuse. Turned out the prev. owner had re-installed the stereo and instead of using the huge great earth VW supply he'd used the dash lighting feed instead. Was fun tracking that little gem down.

Anyway, VW still do the "VW Activ" speaker pods for the front doors, the part number, should you be at all interested, is 191 867 149 for the pod inserts. They're about £18.

I'm going to buy a couple in the next few days, the dash speakers in mine have been upgraded to Sony ones but until I fit the sub'n'amp [1] it sounds clear but there's f*ck all bass. As is to be expected from 6x4 rears and

10cm fronts. I think the door pocket things will make a difference once I've decided what speakers to put in 'em. [1] That's nearly a mod. [2] [2] One that'll get people calling me a chav, no doubt [3] [3] I just like decent tunes, ok?
