My next car...

...is more than likely going to be a Mazda MX-5 1.8 Sport.

Gutless below 4,000 RPM, but actually quite quick and impressive when thrashed, though I wasn't expecting to have to drop down quite so many gears to get decent acceleration.

Build quality seems incredible. No shakes or rattles despite ludicrously stiff suspension. Leather is nice, too.

Any MX-5 owners have anything other to say? All I've heard about them is good, be it from used or new owners. If someone asked be about my 306 with a view to buying one, they'd have a ten hour rant about what has fallen off and how crap the dealer is, despite the car actually being reasonable to drive and never having 'broken down' per se.

In other news - the Sera needed rings :( Ouch. I think I might have to sell it, unless I can sell some music/computer gear. And the Mercedes has been 'lost', so it looks at the moment like a Rover 2000SC might be replacing it.

MX5 hmmm only one i liked was a kitted out grey import with a turbo conversion :-P

to many bloody MX5's get an MR2 instead and make it a MKII turbo or a MK1 supercharger :-)

They're tough cookies - a mate of a mate had a base model 1.6, and it was driven rather hard pretty much all of the time, and nothing serious went wrong with it. His biggest expense outside of fuel was tyre wear, budget rears used to last him half a service interval (he used to buy in bulk, heh, use four sets a year!).

Sell it? Noooooooo!

Richard Kilpatrick waffled on in a quite bewildering manner to produce...

Turbo it ;-)

I turbo'd a 1.8 MX5 for a mate a few years ago, he's still got it, it's still quick, hasn't blown up, is mega tailhappy, and it's running far more boost than is adviseable (18psi...). Skimmed the tops of the pistons, threw some BBR (I think) rod bolts in, balanced it up to death and did a bit of manic chippery. Great fun!

yeah BBR do a kit you can self fit i think :-D

I work in a motor factor and we hardly ever sell bits for em. I'm a big fan of them, I love the driving position ( It put me off before cus Im 6ft6 and I sat in one t'other day and i fitted very well.....

the factory turbo kit is only for the 1.6 and delivers 150bhp, I know that a BBC and lexus derived 4 litre fit very well...

search for bullit conversion on google.

Isn't it still peaky, at that, though? Assuming I kept it after the contract hire ended, I'd be into supercharging one...

Hmm. The 1.8 VVT engine gives you that...

lol its not the only bo kit available, stage III + will give you near 300 bhp.

MKIII MR2 and turbo charger or supercharger kit then :-D

So .... for the first 25mph of acceleration you are watching novaboys, etc pulling away from you???

My longstroke bmw redlines at 4250rpm ... the complete opposite of the mx-5's torque setup.

Engine in the wrong place - if you want a noisy bone jarring ride find an MGF Trophy or a TF160.

TF160s are stupidly overpriced. I've never driven the Trophy; did they do something to the suspension for that one? I've driven an MGF and liked the contrast between ride quality and handling; very impressive despite the poor interior and build quality.

The TF /will/ get driven, but I think it's unlikely to be chosen because the MX-5 is incredibly well made, has a decent boot, decent kit (heated seats, FFS) - and I think the TF is damned ugly at the back. My gf thinks both ends are ugly.

They've sharpened the MX-5 front, it's got some interesting details. And the few over the bonnet is brilliant; enough to make me want one in shiny red!

Not quite - the gearing is such that you just need to rev it. I generally prefer torquier engines - VW 8v over 16V, etc. I actually noticed it at 80mph, when I floored in on the motorway in top, it was somewhat sluggish to move out whereas my 306 (also a 1.8 16v, though lacking VVT) is actually quite responsive there. Dropping a gear made a lot of difference. I'm thinking 'low budget S2000' at the moment.

BAH, get it sorted man - you know you want to :)

But it's a nasty, revvy, VTec-alike lump.

Yuck. Hardly a match for a 1.6 Turbo of the same power !

It is sorted - well, mostly. It's the £1,300 bill that isn't sorted.

Anyone want to buy a Nikon Coolpix 990 digicam? All complete?
