O/T DVD recoder file format ?

My next door neighbour has asked me to "record" a couple of TV programs for him tonight, but I don't have a standalone DVD recorder. I can download the programs he wants, but what format is it best to write 'em to DVD in, so his DVD recorder will read 'em ?

Cheers :)

Well, it's safest to write them out as a DVD, which means having a VIDEO_TS directory containing the appropriate VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.BUP and VIDEO_TS.VOB files. It's generally best to get your disk writing software to create the DVD for you, and most will take a list of AVI files and generate a DVD. However you have to make damn sure that you make a DVD Video disk, not a DVD data disk.

Some DVD players will happily play DivX files. If so simply plonk the AVI files onto a DVD and that will be that.

Depemds, really.

It's worth downloading MPEG Streamclip which is a handy tool for editing and conversion. If you don't have anything else, it's capable of creating a VIDEO_TS directory from a wide range of input formats. Best of all, it's free, fast and much better as far as the quality of output video goes than the commercial offerings.

I'm pretty certain VLC will produce a .ts file from almost anything.

Oh that looks to be useful. I usually use Super to convert video formats then various other packages.

As long as they aren't odd file types just select DVD video in Nero and it should convert it automatically as long as you have one of the higher end packs.

Yes, same here but beleive me Streamclip is much better although supporting fewer formats.

Streamclip can also tidy up discontinuous timecodes such as you get when you edit the adverts out of a program recorded using a DVB USB Stick.

Hmm, I'll be using that too, thanks Steve!

Thanks to all, I just converted the files to .ts format using DVDSanta, then burned 'em. :)

Many thanks, Tony.
