One Samba returned home

Did the drive of nearly 200 miles OK except for one issue.

Overall impression; Nippy and bouncy.

The condition was OK - not great and the re-spray seemed to be a basic one, probably using metallic celly. Bodywork OK but starting to rust at the edges - not what I'd expected but not bad. The seller was thinning down his collection of 45 cars, including a Stag, Austin Healey 3000 and others. Decent history file with the car too, which was encouraging.

The owner'd just serviced it and put a new battery on though so ...

Issues identified/to do:

- Drove OK for the first 50 miles. I stopped for lunch and when I got started again on the M1 the tickover had gone up from 1k rpm to 2.5k rpm and was running fast in neutral but OK in gear. Engine seems OK besides that and it pulls fine. I'll check again tomorrow.

- The hood needs a couple of minor repairs on the seams; mainly rubber edges sticking back on.

- The boot doesn't lock (I don't think) and the parcel shelf is missing.

- A few bits of trim are missing/broken. I'll have some fun finding those!

- No stereo. So it was the likes of Sinead Lohan, Betty LaVette, Triniti, Little Big Town and Fitness to Practice on the MP3 player.

- There's rust appearing in a few places on the edges, but I *should* be able to sort it as it appears the waxoyl-ing hasn't been done since it's only been used as a summer car. I wasn't expecting it to have much but there's more than I thought. But no holes, no filler, and it's surface rust at the edges. The paintwork finish though isn't perfect by any means, although it's more than acceptable.

- Brakes are a bit spongy. Is that 'cos it's French?

- Boy, does it bounce. Light car, convertible, low centre of gravity. Every journey will be like an Alton Towers ride.

- The MOT was from the seller's own garage, which concerned me slightly.

- I put the hood up (not too fiddly) after I swallowed a fly on the M1.

Otherwise it's OK. Probably not worth what I paid for it, but it *is* 23 years old so I've got to expect a few issues.

David.

I've been and bought a ZX today. Seems alright apart from what looks like it'll be a seized brake caliper on the left hand side.

Sounds like a fun little car to play with on little fuel, until you get the cash sorted to pay for the Daimler you lust after.

Good work! I'd definately give the car a good going over though. If he owns an MoT station, he'd obviously get his MoTs done there, but better to be safe than sorry!!

It's my turn tomorrow - picking the SD1 up in the afternoon, then it needs to get about 150miles back to the garage for an MoT! Fingers crossed.

Thanks - I hope it goes well.

I checked through all the paperwork for the Samba this evening - some of his story about the car doesn't add up. The mileometer shows 69400 miles, not the 89000 he e-mailed me with, and the MOT's generally back this up. However, he's only done 1300 miles in the car since getting it in late 2004, which doesn't add up to his 450 miles per weekend in the summer, unless he only went 3 times in 2 years! Also, the restoration work appears to have been done in 2002, not 2004 as per his claim. That'd explain the condition of the hood (minor damage) and paintwork (the same).

In fact, most of the owners (it's got a record of them and their mileage) did 2-3000 miles only, including the car not moving at all for 5 years - most of the mileage was put on by the 2nd owner ('89 - '92) and the 3rd owner did the restoration work in 2002.

Otherwise the service history is somewhat there, although less that I'd normally keep.

Hmmm, sounds a bit suspicious.

But then, it's an old car which wasn't bought for a lot of money in the grand scheme of things, so as long as it works and you're happy thats the main thing!

True. I re-read the ad though, and he didn't give the *exact* date for restoration. I just think he's been using a lot of his 45 cars a little bit at a time. There were a number in his very large garage (and others dotted around it and at his workshop) and there's no way he could have got them all out just to use one for a weekend.

If my garage contained a Stag, an Austin-Healey 3000, an MGF, a Landy, an armoured car and others like it, I'd probably place the Samba towards the back of the list.

True. At worst I'll lose a few hundred on it. And it'll give me the time I need to save up 8-10k before it's sold on either at the end of this year or early next.

And a bit of cheapo top down motoring, which is nice if this weekend's weather is anything to go by

Absolutely.

And when my work stops students crash-parking, I can then get myself a decent car!
