Well the current crop of coupes are very limited if and when you have a rugrat. The Crossfire and Z are pure 2 seaters. The RX8 has rear seat space but the boot is nowhere as good as a nice big hatch. But it's also a lot too tall, it's only just a bit over 1 inch lower than the old Bluebird I had. At 52.8" it's too tall to even think of lowering it to the sport coupe defining benchmark of 50" set by the old 911. Although the 350Z, X-fire and new 911 are all around 51-52" the Supra was 50.2 and 300ZX 49.2. If you want a new coupe to look good you have be careful not to park it near sleeker older ones (but I make a point of parking next to new coupes), just make sure there are lots of ugly tall MPV's and SUV's and family saloons around.

Bring on a useful sports coupe like the 200SX fastback.

200SX is called a 240SX in the USA (with a 2.4L truck engine) and a 180SX in Japan (same as UK until '90 then it got an early version of the 2L engine that came in the 94 UK model). Nadine's had a child seat in it for Kirsty when I first found the site. The 200SX fastback is about as good as it ever got for utility, style and performance. Space for a 26" frame pushbike or two without taking the wheels off or two 6ft shower doors or even 3 teenagers in the back. Can't even get one in the back of a 3d 1.3 Escort "No, you can't make me, I don't fit in there and anyway I'm bigger than you" but they will make themselves fit in this car, it got described as a Tardis. With pace that many current coupes need 2.5-3L V6 engines and over 200bhp to match. At 50.8" it just needs lowering an easy 1" to get it under 50". Whatever else I look at I wind up getting more on one or two requirements but totally unacceptable to the point of being useless on another, no back seats and/or a boot or ugly tall car or lack of go.

But it's not supposed to.

At a shade over £40,000 new, the RX7 was stupidly overpriced - it's no wonder Mazda sold bugger all of them, when you could have a decent Porsche for the same money.

RX8 is much more of a mass-market machine.

Bloody hell, have you taken leave of your senses ?

The Crossfire is truly HORRENDOUS ! It looks like someone has just stuck a load of wierd parts on a dated old Merc. . . . . Oh...wait a minute...

I drove one last year and at the end of 2 days of driving it I couldn't work out if I loved or hated the clutchless manual box in it. The only thing I could compare it to is a Lotus Elise. Except it didn't leak when it rained.

You must of been a fly on the wall when they designed it.

There was a guy in last months Retro Cars with an SD1 (I think) Rover V8 shoehorned into an MGB - now that was quite some car! Cars like that can get away with being tiny, somehow the Crossfire just doesn't cut it for me.

Er... they made MGBs with this engine, that's what the MGBGT or MGBV8 or whatnot is. Although the engine is the same, the ancilliaries aren't because there's less space to put things like the intake / carbs and so forth. Particularly the exhausts as well, usually a compromise on the manifolds.

Nice car, though, generally. Shame it wasn't a convertible really. My next door neighbour used to have one.

Really? Never knew that.

MGB GTV8.

Probably most of the ones you see out and about are conversions because, like the TR7, production was mainly four cylinder cars. So most v8s will be a MGB GT or roadster with an SD1 engine and gearbox shoehorned in, it's a recognised and not at all rare conversion, I am told.

A lot of fun, I suspect. ;)

Nice! I could go for one of those if I ever have room for a "weekend" car.

Been looking at the rest of that site - ah for the days when an MG wasn't just a chaved-up-for-you-at-the-factory Rover....

It's the story of a lot of marques, although looking at the history on the MG site they seem to have gone into badge engineering a lot earlier than most.

BL are usually blamed for this.

Imagine the chassis flex in a convertible MGB V8 if you put your foot down round a corner.

If it is a dodgy chop, you can at least get the hood to fit by opening both the doors before trying to raise it.

It means you shag animals.

Full kudos for owning up tho :)
