OT - Car tax + CO2

So next year car tax goes up again but I do not understand the new costs...

Taking my car into this apparently my 150bhp 1.8tQ Audi pushes out 221 (g/km) That puts me in the same band as a 3.0 X5, but a 163bhp 1.8t Audi A4 on parkers shows 169 (g/km)

Mine is in the same Co2 band as the 225 bhp 1.8t's, so is their anyway you can contest this? can you write to the DVLA and tell them they have your car wrong? or is it gospel??

The V5 is definitely wrong, and It will save me over £100 a year.

Soz, looks like because it's quattro they rape your arse, from 187 co2 to

221 just for having 4wd :(

You buy a planet killing 4x4 you get what you get. Think of the children. Every extra driven wheel kills a school faster than a black clad student.

Pete's tatra will bring him up on genocide charges if he ever gets it registered here.

Surely as a quattro, it uses more fuel tho, when compared to the FWD version? Isn't it about time you got a new car anyway dude hehe :-) Haven't you had this Audi for like 10 years or something? It must have like

500k miles on it by now :-D!

(note: figures above may well all be over 100% inaccurate)

4wd means you have 2 diffs and a splitter all churning oil, it amounts to about 2x the oil churn losses that the gearbox and 2wd diff gives. That extra oil churn means you burn more fuel, burning more fuel makes more CO2, more CO2 = more tax. OK on some cars the diff crown wheel can be smaller, as with Subaru, but doesn't seem to make much difference. Freewheel hubs and a dog clutch to de-select the front wheels so one diff slows to a stop and doesn't churn oil has a big effect but is only fitted to very few vehicles.

Solution? Buy a proper car with proper wheel drive.

My B5.5 Passat with the same Quattro system and a TDI 130 engine never ever averaged more than about 43mpg. Often less than that.

I believe a 2WD version can do much better than that - which sort of confrims what you're saying.
