Re: Another Saab Question..Matt?

There is a whistling noise, but I just thought it was the > turbo spinning it's a bit louder with the window open :-) >

If the overboost, or pressure transducer is leaking, you will hear a hiss coming from the passenger/left hand speaker grille, as they are both located below the speaker.

Some vacuum leaks don't show up as noise. So replace the hoses with decent silicon till you find it, then replace the rest to match (do a different colour to black, and then you know which you have done.

Also the Bosch recirc dump valve (if fitted to the late 8v, should be on APC cars I think) tended to rip their diaphrams and leak under boost pressure. They ar eabout £30 to replace, or bailey do an alloy one for about £90.

Standard boost should be about 2/3 into the orange section, on the way to red. It will spike to about 3/4, then drop back. Once that is sorted, you can start tweaking the APC.

BTW, do you have cruise control? If it is set to on, you will only get Base Boost (what you are describing). Like wise, if the brake and clutch switches for clutch are faulty and making a connection boost will be limited to base too. With these kind of faults it is more tweaks and scrap yard parts than seriosu rebuilds. I spent months trying to work out what was causing my base boost. Turned out the overboost protection was leaking vacuum. Disconnected and bridged the hoses, and normal service has been resumed.

The noise is definitely coming from the engine. It's what I can only describe as turbo whistle, only hear it just as the turbo starts to spool up.

Don't *think* it's got one. Can't find it anyway..

Yes, it does this now. I've guessed the Saab "specialist" I took it too was trying to pull a fast one. When I took it, it was running on Tesco's unleaded. I put Optimax in it today :-) It seems to reach a higher boost level in the top 3 gears - 3/4 or more - is this normal? It pulls like a train. Quicker than the 2.8 Capri I had..

No, no cruise control. I think the only fancy bits are the heated seats, leccy mirrors and leccy sunroof! even my radio only gets 1 station :-)

Aha! This would be what the Haynes book of lies refers to as a "charge pressure regulator" would it?

I know where that is!

Nope thats for the really early 99/900 Turbo 8V's that had an external wastegate type affair bolted to the end of the turbo. The 8V doesn't have a dump valve. Go rob a 16V throttle housing and mount a Bailey DV26 to the standard dump valve posistion.

Sounds to me like its fine now the APC's connected back up. 3/4 into the red is higher than standard, should just make it into the red but providing that its pulling the boost back down as RPM increases and that during a long on boost run the pressure slowly peels off to rest around the end of the orange or so then the APC is working as it should. Sounds like somebodys already Type-M'd it mate.

Time for a full Aero kit, leather, Avo's, Poly/Nylon bush everything, some

16" Super Aeros or nice 17's and water injection. Oh and it should be just a tad quicker than a 2.8 capri (and a lot less lethal ;-) )

I thought the intercooled/APC'd late model 8v's had a dumpvalve (especially the LTD Ed ones).
