It's obvious that faced with more riots and possible murders of Americans, Newsweek decided to downgrade its little news item to mere rumor - without saying it was untrue. "Apologies" are cheap and meaningless nowadays.

I think the 'story' was leaked with intent to inflame holy war. There is a contingent that profits when people are fighting each other. To the muslims of the world: Dont let these 'news' anger you to action without thought. Yours and ours best courses remain those of righteousness, not anarchy.

Newsweek maintains that the story is true. After all it is corroborated by al Jazeera and an un-named Russian news agency.
