Re: More car wonderings

Only if it was bodged back together.

I've had 2. One needed doing when i brought it, so i got it cheap. Never had a problem after that. The other was fine in the time i had it and was sold to a mate of my dads, and AFAIK is still going know with the same head gasket. K-series are brilliant little engines, especially in MPi form. As long as they're looked after they're fine IME.

Only on the 220.

Still... if you're that asthetically fussed about it, you can retro fit a

220 bonnet.

That was my one before I chucked my 15" AEZs back on it - being something that needs revving hard, the 17s slowed it down more than perhaps they would something like my Golf TDi.

And yes... it would have looked a bit nicer if I'd lowered it, but given the lack of adjustable camber etc., I felt it better to keep something that actually handled quite well without wearing the inside edges of tyres out prematurely, as it was.

Great cars anyway, if you want something fun to rag that doesn't scream 'pull me!' at any passing plod.

And they're pretty good on juice as well, considering they're 130bhp as standard.

Thats what i meant, but still the same shape though!

What is; the shell or the bonnet?

If the former, yes, if the latter, no.

That doesn't really differenciate between either model really, does it, given some 216s were twin cam...

The shell. The look of the car is still the same is what i meant.

Fuck you :)

Also the lil' K series was a twin cam. I meant the bigger 2.0 twin cams though.

Yes... are we going to discuss the 1769 and 1905cc diesels as well while we're here, or are we just going to continue to argue the toss over the 1598 and 1998 petrol models?

I definitely would. I would fit a simple low-coolant warning system (rather than the 'you have run out of coolant and need a new headgasket' warning system fitted as standard). The _vast_ majority never lose any coolant and the k-series is otherwise a rather nice and very economical engine.

I wouldn't get an MGF though :)

Only some of the ones owned by people who check fluids once every 6 months. Don't get one of those!

Funny, isnt that what SteveH says about some tempramental, unreliable, seizetastic wop machinery? (c:

One thing the wops always did well was engines. You'll note I don't go anywhere near the new ones......

The widebody ones are the only ones to have though. Q4 excepted, obviously

I'd go the other way, I like the Fiat block, Alfa head ones. And the cambelt shouldn't ever cost more than £150.

I don't know about that. They turned corrosion into a fine art. And they give the English car industry a run for their money on electrical problems.

I think you can assume that of any of the cars in your price bracket to be honest. You just have to be resonably lucky. FWIW my mate had a 414 with

105k on it, and a full history with every receipt (company owned before him) and it had never had a head gasket. Shame he rolled it. Then got a 35k 214 and put 15k on it, HG fine again. I think its just shit people that ignore the coolant light that have problems.

Anything that is designed to need to use a bit of oil, and still be no better than the competition, isn't good engineering in my book.

Reply to
DanTXD

No, it's mainly poor design and quality control.

I'm not going to repeat the story of the mother-in-law's MGF, but that is a prime example of how fragile a K-series engine _can_ be - it's all in the luck of the draw.

Reply to
SteveH

The point is that, at the time, they _were_ better than 90% of the competition.

When the original 16v TSpark was launched, only the Mi16 engine came close.

To be fair tho, both Astra GTEs and XR3i's are both SERIOUSLY shit :)
