Rear discs on 1998 Escort...

I'd like to convert the brakes on a 1998 1.6 16v Escort to discs instead of drums, purely for cosmetic purposes rather than stopping power.

Would I get away with taking the rear hubs off a 1.6 Orion (which has discs strangely) and swapping them for the drums...or does it require a more sinister approach?

Someone mentioned that I'd need to get the rear axle off the above said car or an RS2000 (not much good if it's a RWD though?).

Another thing, would the current brake system (servo etc) be up to the job of powering another set of discs? Is there any difference?

Any advice would be much appreciated, especially from anyone who's already did a similar conversion.

Ta, G.

you need the whole axle swap it over use the rs2000 handbrake cable as for the m/c, it moves more fluid in the calipers than it does in the wheel cylinders, so you would havethought it would need changing thats before you discover that there may be more than one sort AND before youdiscover that you might not be abel to mix and match them and the servo due to the actuating rod length and shape

so to summarise, find the rs2000/orion/escort with the rear axle complete and take the servo m/c sassembly with you from the same car

make sure you remember to mark up which pipes go to which wheel as some do opperate a different way to others

What's the point?

Surely it'll cost more than the car is worth to do it, ffs!

you would have to be real unlucky to get a driven rear axle on an rs2000 as there was only 500 4x4's made roughly

the rest are all fwd grot boxes :)

so they will be fine

The FWD was better than the 4wd....

It wasn't powerful enough to warrent the 4wd, it just slowed it down, moreso.

In news:9IdGd.170$% snipped-for-privacy@newsfe5-gui.ntli.net, Rob decided to enlighten our sheltered souls with a rant as follows

As an ex-owner of a Mk5 RS2000 I disagree.

The Mk5 RS2000 was the last good Escort they made, and the only good FWD Escort they ever made.

The 4x4, whilst having better wet road traction, didn't handle as well. It gripped better, but it didn't handle as well.

The main problem the OP will have is the small one of most late model - as in after the Mk5 - RS's didn't have rear discs. They went back to drums in about 94.

It'd be a shame to take the rear beam off a genuine RS Mk5 because someone wants to make a cosmetic improvement to a late model Escrot.

I'm not going to spend circa £1k to do it, I'm looking for a cheapish solution. Anywho, I didn't ask for any comments on how financially economical it was to do, just what mechanics where involved. As for the 'painted calipers' pish...I have no intention of painting them, I just dislike the sight of a rusty drum.

Cheers dojj, not the best of news from a simplistic point of view, but what I needed to hear.

Surely if you dislike the sight of a rusty drum you'll dislike the sight of rusty calipers, which is one reason why people paint them. Or another option would be to remove the drums, rub them down and paint them if it's just rusty drums you don't like the look of - you can get special paint to do the trick - I think Hammerite does the job, though there might be something more specialised for painting drums.

But for a cheap way to do it - get a badly smashed up car with the standard rear disc setup (or find one in a breakers yard) and get the whole back axle off it (as others have mentioned).

Nope - to be honest, that doesn't bother me too much as the front calipers aren't that bad looking. If I was to paint them it would be a simple black, nothing like blue, red, or God forbid, yellow.

Yup, suppose, paint 'em black and you won't see em at night. But then there is the issue of people thinking "boy racer" when they see a painted drum.

Yup - I'll need to do some more digging about !

Obviously I don't plan on taking it from a working car, I'm hoping to find a front ended write off.

Yep - same applies to the 405 Mi16 4x4.

look for the online mkv escort register they should be able to help you source parts as well as help you with the more techincal side of things like what to do when fitting certain nuts and/or bolts where they might not have lived previously

You could change the wheels so that you don't see the drums - it works for me. :)
