Relays - How do i wire them up?

Any one got anyideas, i wants the relay to work with ignition (2 wires sorted for that) to turn another curciut on and off, which is also sorted. But theres 5 prongs? and i dont know where to connect to where.

If you look on the bottom of the relay the terminals should be numbered. If the relay you have follows standard numbering convention, then the following applies:-

85, 86 - Relay coil. Wire one terminal to your ignition supply, the other to an earth point on the body. 30 - Connect to the power supply for the item you wish to control with the relay (e.g direct to the battery (but through a fuse!)). 87 - This contact connects to terminal 30 when the relay coil is energised.

87a - This contact is connected to terminal 30 when the coil is NOT energised.

You've got what is known as a changeover, or double throw, relay. It's exactly the same in principle as a two way house mains switch if that helps. The common contact makes with one when the relay is 'off', and the other when 'on'

Assuming you've sorted out the relay coil contacts, experiment with the others - you won't do any harm.

Some have standard numbering to tell you which does what - it's given in a previous post.
