It's bullshit anyway, indicating right to say you're going straight on. Not how I was taught to drive...

Bah, the Talivans in Stockton white with yellow roof lights, and yellow and red chevrons on the back doors. They look like a workman's van until you get alongside and see the 'THINK' sign...

Really? There is a mini roundabout near me where people have the habit of doing exactly that, and as far as I am aware it is wrong! Certainly when I learned to drive, if you approached a roundabout you indicate left if going left, right if going right and you don't if straight on. You then indicate left as you pass the exit before the one you want (so in this case, you should theoretically indicate left if going straight on, but only after passing the left exit). Is it taught differently now? If plod pulled me for that, I'd be mighty pissed off too! James

Well I agree with you. I dont indicate if im going straight on. In my dads case, I would have only indicated right if I wanted to do a U-turn and come back on myself. If you explain your side of things to the plod, they often back down if you have a good arguement and make references to HWC etc.

Reminds me of when I was 17 and in my second car, a Renault 19 16v, which is group 15 insurance. I got pulled over going through Exeter, and got told that I jumped a red light. I politely but firmly told him I didnt, and if I had, that I would have had a collision with another car due to the lights switching from my right of way to another lanes very quickly. I said that I went through on amber, and decided not to stop due to having a tailgater that could quite possibly rear-ended me if I had performed a quick stop. I also told him how I checked the road I was merging into, mirrors, blindspot etc etc, blah blah. He didnt have much to say to all that, due to not actually being able to see my set of lights from where he was (so I guess he thought I went through a red because of how quick the other lane got a green).

After he backed down on that, I got the spanish inquisition about me being insured on a Grp15 insurance car at 17, and he even radioed in to find out who was insured on the car, then went around the whole car checking it over, tyre tread depth, tax, etc. Found nothing so decided to give me a producer which I had sorted out within the hour!

Just goes to show that if you catch one on a bad day (or they just dont like the look of you!), they can give you as much aggro as they want! Bar stewards!

but you can't argue out of that one by referring to the HWC: section 162 says (in part, full text at

"When taking the last exit or going full circle signal right and approach in the right-hand lane keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want."

The Highway code does not refer to 'left', 'right' or 'straight on' at roundabouts, it has first exit, last exit and everything inbetween. I have sympathy if the highway code differed to that previously and that's how people learnt, but that's the current code and it's what I rememember being taught ~12 years ago.

However, there are no words like 'MUST' or 'MUST NOT' in that section of the highway code, or reference to specific Laws/Acts, so failing to follow it isn't illegal in itself - but I expect plod would claim you were driving without due care and attention if you annoyed them...
