Heh.

You'll note I'm not doing the low pressure pikey turbo option, though.

Dad's had one for 4 yrs now, its a 2000 model High pressure job, it's very very quick, but stupid amounts of torque steer and everything feels cheap inside, the leathers are quite nice and its quite a soft ride. The electrics can be a pain, the digits in the dual climate sometimes come on and off.

In all it's a nice car but I would not swap it for my Audi in a million years.

The facelift cars have tightened up ride and better interior quality, also a different climate panel without the digital display (rotary knobs instead, but still dual-zone etc).

In terms of cost, I've just priced up a low miles estate on an 07 plate, coming in at under £15k.

A saloon would be a couple of grand cheaper.

Quite impressed with the estate, though - much more practical and they have a solid, sound-proofed shelf rather than a vinyl roller blind over the boot, so it's as quiet and refined as the saloon version.

In terms of performance for your money, you can't go wrong.

I've left the dealer pricing up a servicing package based on 2 services a year, so we'll see what the maintenance costs come back at.

He won't be happy with it. So the boring game of boring repmobile tennis will continue until September / October, or whenever the heck it happens, or doesn't happen, or like, whatever.

Late October. Lease expires then.

But I'm puzzled by your definition of 'repmobile', though, given that I'm not actually looking at anything that could be considered a 'repmobile'. I leave that to the likes of you, with your limited budget and wife telling you what to buy.

Perhaps if you actually made some kind of worthwhile contribution to the group, it may help, you know.

The 'mini review' posts, from all posters, are some of the few posts that stimulate conversation in here.

HTH.

It's okay, I understand. You're so desperate to not be accused of being a sales rep for a retailer, that you have a grand job title and are trying to impress everybody who is reading (and probably listening) that you can have a less than dull car because you're different.

But you won't buy an Alfa Romeo, which is funny. Not quite as funny as the reply I expect to get back from you.

Say, do your ears wiggle when I reply to one of your posts, or do you genuinely have nothing better to do with your time?

Yup, that's right, 'Area Manager' is *such* a grand job title, isn't it?

Not trying to impress anyone, just discussing cars, which, funnily enough, is what the uk.rec.cars.* groups are for.

It's just that this place is probably more appropriate than the others because it's a fairly tightly-knit group where we mostly know each other.

I'm sorry it annoys you, but that's life I'm afraid.

I've been looking for a 159 2.4 JTD Q-Tronic which comes in on budget, but they don't exist.

HTH.

If that isn't funny enough for you, then I'm sorry, but that's the facts.

Pissing down with rain, nothing better to do.

I mostly spend a lot of time online, 'cos I'm mostly avoiding getting pissed in hotel bars, though.

But your obsession has been noted, many, many times. You've now elevated yourself to such a level of self-importance you're running the risk of imploding.

Unfortunately cheap and tacky is the word with modern saabs. Stuff they were making 20 years ago was like a bank vault - now they're just known for rebadged ill-handling vauxhalls, what a shame....

still they are very cheap....

Now you understand.

Well, I understand the 9-5 HOT. Don't understand the LPTs or the diesels, especially as the TTiD isn't fitted to the 9-5.

The 2.8 V6 Turbos look interesting too.

Not convinced by the 9-3 either. Not very 'Saab', IYSWIM. At least the

9-5 has the proper Saab 'clamshell' bonnet and rear window lines.

Anyway, whilst it may not be my first choice, that would be the S-Type, as an overall ownership package it may well make most sense - lower running costs, less likely to break and significantly quicker.

However, the real thing that tips the balance is that my local dealer is

*very* good - the test drive was a good half to 3/4 of an hour, taking in dual carriageway / motorway, town and country driving, with plenty of opportunities to really experience the power and handling.

Salesman also is getting me a price for a monthly maintenance package and has invited me back to test the car again if I'm still undecided. Which is a lot more than the other dealers have done.

They do like a drink though, don't you think ?

(Well, 9000s do anyway, I don't imagine that a 9-5 will be the motoring equivalent of a Trappist Monk in comparison.)

Official figures aren't too bad, actually - with a combined consumption of 28mpg.

Aero models were much higher geared in the 9000 than standard fpt and lpt cars. My Aero is doing a combined of 27-29mpg and that has the lowest final drive (an injection box) fitted (less worn than aero boxes when they are pulled from scrappers). It is doing 2k rpm at 50 in 5th, it should be close to 70 with those revs, which would make it much more economical.

Understand what? It's not like he's had an epiphony, they're cheap because they depreciate like a stone, they're pretty powerful without having a huge engine and are also nicely heaped with gadgets - like that shit night vision, gadgets thrown at them to help them sell ;-) I got the impression he only tested it just to make sure it was driveable without being too shit.

I drove it for a few reasons:

260bhp Leather Decent stereo Cheap Auto box with flappy paddles

and did I mention 260bhp?

The fact is that it's a perfectly acceptable car - not the torque-steering, chassis twisting heap of shit I suspected it would be.

You can't go faster in a 1 year old car for the same money, which is why I may well end up buying one.

But never confuse it for anything other than being a very cheap, very fast, but out dated barge.

It's no Alfa 159, but then it doesn't command 159 prices.

Heh, now I understand too. I've had the "Oh they really are that cheap?" epiphony now as well. I feel so enlightened.

He did say faster.

SteveH in a Saab would be funny, because he would viciously defend the 9-5 and claim that my 9-3 isn't a proper Saab and has the pointless 1.8t donk.
