I doubt that M5 Touring is worth saving.

It won't go in a 3 series E30 but in the later 3-series (E36, E46) it fits. The conversion is straight forward and has had its fair deal of success in Belgian circuitracing even against works-BMW M3's.

In fact: they were so good/fast/cheap/reliable that the rules were changed guess on who's demand?

Just because someone has done it, doesn't mean it will *fit*. You can put just about any engine into any car, given enough time and money :)
