To settle an argument between 2 friends...

..which is faster? A 2002 Omega MV6 or a 2002 Volvo V70 T5? (both auto boxes)

I'd go with the T5 myself, but my other friend reckons that his Omega would have it for breakfast. I keep telling them to go and settle their argument on a track somewhere, but they don't seem keen.

Hmmm, the Omega's only got 205bhp, and takes 8 seconds to 60mph - it's not exactly quick.

The Volvo (assuming the quickest of the T5 lumps here) has a huge advantage with it's extra 40bhp, and it's almost a second quicker to 60mph.

Top-end is very similar - both around 150mph.

Tell the dude with the Omega to go and buy a quick car, if he wants to brag about performance !

Ah, but how does it compare from say 60 to say 80 or 100?

Seeing as an Omega MV6 is dog slow, and severely undernourished with power compared to the T5, it wouldn't stand a chance.

The one redeeming factor is likely to be the slush boxes tho. Volvo auto boxs seem to sap a lot of power - and I suspect that is why this question is being asked in the first place. If they were both manual, you wouldn't need to ask, the Volvo would just munch the Omega for the proverbial 'breakfast'. And it would be an all day breakfast.

The Omega would get wasted there as well. Even if they were putting the same power out, The Vauxhall gearbox specialists would make sure it couldn't compete by putting 5th gear in where 4th should have been :)

There you have it then. Looks like the T5 has it all ways.

T5 wins hands down.

Test drove a few Omegas when I was looking.. even the 3.2 doesnt cut it with the T5.

volvo dropped the power of the real big power T5's from 250 with teh manual box to 240 with the auto somwething to do with it having too much power :)

Have to agree with you on that one, my old 2.6 straight 6 Carlton was a lot quicker and more top end than my present 2.5 V6 Omega.

it's not s**te Theo, infact its a good drive, I have driven my dads MV6 loads, as it has tons of power, its just s**te at putting it down, and the Auto doesnt help either.

The engine is sweet as f*ck though, and its as quiet as my Audi, the build quality of the omega is very poor though, so the volvo would get my blessing.

But don't knock that 3.0 v6 its a very good engine, and it looks the bollocks as well, its not the same engine they put in the 3.0 Elite, or am I wrong?

hmmm - won't be a lot in it but I reckon the Omega will be quicker to 30, T5 in front by 60 and way ahead by 140. And you can easily chip the T5 to make it even quicker....

I was wondering on the Omega's 145 top end, my 2.5 reaches that with no problem.

Recently founf out that my car overreads wildly >100mph, 100 real is about

112 indicated. Same with most.cars. So although mine will indicate 150mph it really doesn't get there.

I appreciate this, so assuming it's 10% out, I am still looking at 130+. That's reasonably fast enough for me.

it's not just the omega's I've got a 3k miles vectra, new on an 03 plate and already the bottom of the dash has started to come away on the drivers side, the alarm button thing is fallen further back into the dash, the clutch footrest has come away from the carpet resulting in a squeak every time you put your foot down, the steering wheel has visibly moved to the right

other than that, it's a fine car, and the engine (2.2) is just what I remember vx engines to be like, loads of low down torque at the expense of actual power where it matters and gear boxes that are way to leggy for the car

1100 rpm see's 30 mph the air con is blindingly good though :)
