Today i've mostly been....

....hillclimbing. Well watching it at least. Bloody good laugh and some fantastic machinery out. PLenty of nutty bike engine stuff, quite a few rover V8 based cars, even some ex F1 engined cars. Had to leave early cos the weather turned s**te, but fun nonetheless. You can even pay to have a go yourself (not on race days obviously) which i may look at doing in a few months time.

Thought you'd might like to know :) Off to the pub now...

cool where was that? i got rallisport challenge 2 on my x box and the hill climbing races are my fave in the game, 170mph over rough ground is bloody scary :)

climbing races are my

Up near Salisbury in the Wiltshire countryside. I think the quick cars were hitting about 140 before braking for the hairpin we stood at (although there were quite a few 'pussy' drivers out too). One guy stacked it by feeding the power in slightly too early on the exit and spun straight into a fence made of railway sleepers. He retired :) Think i may go up again next month!

How much is it to have a run, and what sort of requirements are there? I'm half tempted to thrash the old Triumph for a laugh, see how much slower it is than everything else :)

Unfortunately its not simply 'a thrash'. Its a proper driving school with tuition and stuff. £150 for the day. The good thing is that if you're car is road legal then you can take it round.

Although i may try and arange some sort of outing with our motor club if the landowners would be interested.

Really ? How does that work then ?

Don't they need rebuilding every few hundred miles ? You can't exactly buy new internals from your local Halfords :)

Dont ask me, i just watched them. A few of them are exF1/Indycar V8s (some bored out for a bit more grunt) and there was 1 exF1 V10. Bear in mind the course was only 1km long so assuming 6 runs over the weekend thats 6km per event, so theoretically the engine could last a season before a rebuild.

maybe they re-tune it for torque and stop them revving to 14k RPM :)

Yeah, interesting. I suppose these sorta peeps will be so "good", that they'll just make a new one of anything they need :)

You can buy pretty much anything you need, it just gets more expensive. Pistons, rods, bolts, etc you could go to Real Steel and I bet they would be able to get pretty much whatever you needed to renovate the engine.

From what i was reading in the programme they're actually re-tuned for MORE power and more torque by being bored out. Some of the cars were quicker than F1 cars apprently :)

Some of the cars are ready made, but some are home-made and the engineering is very impressive (you can get right up close in the paddock). Next time i might see if i can get talking to some of teams there and find out some more info!

Most of the top guys have their engines on a lease contract from someone like Nicholson McLaren engines or similar. The technology in hillclimb cars is very specialised indeed and the top drivers are awesome. Think about

650bhp on a country lane - sometimes with armco on both sides - and the car weighs less than my locost. So you're maybe talking about 1000bhp/ton or better. If you only ever go once, find a hillclimb near you which is hosting a round of the British Hillclimb Championship and go and watch the top 12 runoff. Preferably near the end of the year when there is a real sense of something to play for. Can you tell that hillclimbing is a bit of a favourite of mine ;-) See hear for details

We missed the top12 runoff due to the weather turning crap and having a lack of appropriate clothing :( Hopefully get back for the second round there in August and see the whole thing though!

they held anywhere around essex? doubt it as it aint very hilly down south but i'd like to go see it. played the hill climbing stuff on the x box rallisport 2 and it's scary enough on that. 150+mph on rough ground with sometimes a steep drop to the ground! mental and i defo wouldn't try it
