Today I want a

Citi Golf.

Had a MK1 GTI briefly (back in the day) and apart from this one having a

1272cc carb fed engine, I find this strangely tempting.

855kg apparently.

A current base model MK6 Golf with all its safety bits, Aircon, blah blah weighs 1215kg.

37% heavier than the original car.

No wonder a MK1 GTI goes so well compared to a modern turbocharged car.

The fact that I find myself preferring the old car further confirms me as an old git greater than my years.

I saw one of those a year or so back and couldn't figure out what a Mk1 = golf was doing on such a new plate. One of the 1.8 litre ones would be very nice indeed - I'm sure there = would be a market for them in the UK for an importer.

Would make a very good base car for a MkI 1.8T conversion :)

huh another DVLA f*ck up on the reg. i knew a guy on IMOC that had an MR2 turbo a year older than mine. it was a 1992 but it was imported in 2002 and the nobs at the DVLA gave it an 02 plate instead of a K plate which it should of had :)

Erm, no.

It's a 'Citi Golf', and IIRC these are made and sold in South Africa, and have been for 'some time' since the Mk1 Golf was phased out over here.

I drove a MkIV diseasel Golf yesterday (courtesy car from the Garage servicing my car). What a heap of shit. I don't think I've ever driven such a noisy, clattery, slow, heavy, lumpen piece of rubbish. Not only that but the steering wheel had that bizarre problem where the rubber covering has broken free from the steel rim so it was downright dangerous as it squirmed in my hands. Horrible in every respect.

Why people think that VW=quality is beyond me. That car was worse than any Ford that I have ever driven, including clunky ready to be scrapped Mk1 Mondeos.

If it's that dangerous, why is the garage concerned still letting people borrow it?

It's not like you can't pick up steering wheels for those for sensible money off eBay.

I remember looking into this. Someone VW beetle/camper specialist did import them for a while but to make any money on them they had to sell them for at least 10 grand. They are about 6 grand (pounds) in South Africa, which isn't much of a bargain considering the lack of development costs. They did have a spangly modern interior though, maybe the previous-to-current Polo or perhaps Lupo. That said, that interior looks a bit wrong given the retro exterior but it's probably to satisfy the crash-test bureaucrats.

The only bit of trim to get lost off my Ford in 180,000 miles is the cover over the diagnostic socket. Lost by the main dealer during a service and despite nagging they have never quite got around to replacing it. Bastards.

Obviously it's a sign of dreadful build quality.

OTOH the Seat Leon (VW) that I had on hire spontaneously disintegrated around me as I drove it. I've not seen such shoddy build quality since the last time I drove a Rover .

But the description says its been converted to right hand drive which would mean its not possible to be South African car as all the Citi Golfs were actually made right hand drive!

It's obviously a Citi Golf, so it wouldn't of course be possible that it's always been a right hooker and the owner is a bit clueless... would it.

Mine, at 118,000 still looks like new or at least it would if I cleaned the kids shit out of it. The only problem with letting kids eat McDonalds in a car is finding fries under the back seat 6 months later.

No bits fallen off or worn through though.

I think the first of the rounded Fiestas were pretty poor (J-reg or = there abouts) or at least the ones I drove were , but the revised model = after that seemed a lot better. The last Escorts weren't great but we've had two generation of Focus = since then. The Sierras were pretty good by standards of the day and the Mondeos = have all been well reviewed. The Ka seems to get a slating for rust but the only ones I've ever seen = that had brown bits had obvious unrepaired accident damage too - = something to be expected on a car aimed at novices.

I can't think of anything that was universally criticised in the same = way that the Vauxhall Sintra was.

There's a fugly Fiesta that's got a rounded arse and Chinese eye type headlamps.

None have really been lemons unless you look to America and the really horrible Mustangs they kicked out in the 80's and 90's. They've all sold shitloads. Some have been a bit mundane.
