Uh oh - 'what car' car opinions sought - BMWs

Does anyone have experience of the 3litre I6 as used in BMW 3ers and 5ers?

I'm looking for a reliable >30mpg torquefest, partly for commuting but also some 200+mile A-road journeys several times per year where overtaking is a sport. I want to know how well this engine wears high mileages.

I just want you to know Elder - that blue 2.0 Turbo Avantime near me is still on the 'trader and I have seriously considered going to have a look today. (c:

Yes. Pretty well all BMW engines do if looked after by proper servicing. Only exception was the Nikasil thingie which doesn't apply here.

It's an absolute gem of an engine.

I'll second that. 300k miles is certainly achieveable with regular oil changes. With a manual gearbox, you should easily get 30+mpg unless you drive like Ben Hur.

Every BMW 6 cylinder I have ever driven was a lovely thing. They all had a creamy spike in the power around 4,500rom which seemed to lift the car onto another level.

However..........................................

I know you'll fall out with me here.

You mentioned a torquefest.

You mentioned >30mpg.

I won't even say the word.

But you want the 3.0 engine with the single turbo, 369lb.ft of torque from

1750rpm and still does 45mpg.

It still sounds like a BMW 6 cylinder, and when you're not in the mood, you can leave it in top and slug along.

The 6's cetainly are. Not so sure about the V8's. They seem to have more problems. Rad and cooling system faults seem more common than on the 6's Mike.

Oh, I forgot to mention I was meaning the Diesel. The Petrol 3litre is a possibility, but I'd not expect to see 30mpg from the way I like to drive.

I'm not even averaging 30mpg from the Mazda at the moment but the exhaust is making some funny noises so I think there could be something wrong with it.

I was asking about BMWs because some commonrail engines have a reputation for eating £1500 high pressure fuel pumps at regular intervals.

Can I be predictable here and suggest that you forget diesels and get a V8 somethingorother with LPG?

Thanks.

The right hand pedal goes all the way to the floor, you know.

I only got around 32mpg over 800 miles in the Sportwagon last week.

If you are going BMW or even Merc and LPG then surely you want a V12.

Big gas fan here too obviously....

In an ideal world, but V12s are overkill in a lot of restecps, and V8s are still plenty powerful and torqueful, but are pretty damn economical in comparison.

Heh, but I want boot space and I don't want a 50 mile round trip to buy fuel every 200 miles. (c:

Which is always an issue.

I bought gas today, because I was passing the station, not because I needed it. I realised that if I time it wrong, I'm out of gas and would have to run on petrol. I think we live in a gas free zone around here. If my next car is a diseasel, which it might be, I can go to the Tesco at the end of the road at 3.00 in the morning if I want.

As well as that, although I really do like the difference of running gas, I also miss the big torque / reasonable economy.

Anything less than overkill is a waste of effort and passion.

We live in the middle of no where, and nothing new is usually available. But weirdly, within like 4 miles of here, there is a 24hr Shell garage that sells LPG and a little independant place just across the road from it that doesn't really advertise it, but does sell it, because I can remember going with a lad at college in his dad's V8 Range Rover that was running on LPG to get it filled up. This was like, 6 or 7 years ago :-) I'm sure he must've made his money back by now hehe, it was like 25p a litre or something back then at this little indy place!

Um. My 325i only gets near 30 mpg on a run. 20 in town on a good day.

I refer you to my point made above.

Isn't 32mpg quite a lot from a 2.0 16v NA? That's long steady run stuff from the Clio... Actually driving it, and you're more like 26/27mpg. Driving it properly and you're looking at 23/24 :-)
