Upgrade!

Whoop! I know I don't post on here that often but I just gotta tell people anyway..

I've gone and bought a Porsche 944 to replace my 924 - bit of a project though as it's been off the road for nearly two years, during which time it's had a lot of new bits put on it - including a replacement engine. The previous owner lost interest and never even drove it on the road in all the time he had it! Am I asking for trouble? It looked good and optimistically I decided to drive it straight to an MOT station for testing.. I'll find out in the morning what the news is. I had tons of white smoke pouring out for the first few minutes on the road, plus it ran out of fuel after about 200 metres!! Fortunately, after some extra fuel, it drove fantastically... can't believe it's just sat on someone's drive for that long. Ah well.. keeping my fingers crossed about the MOT.

Arghghh!!!!!!

Chris.

Goiod luck mate. You now have a Porker rather than VW engine, so parts will be priceier if bought from Porsche. Good motor though, but could be a money pit. Hope not. Enjoy, and I look forward to reading the MOT testers sarcastic "Advice" column.

How do you know he didn't have a proper Porker engine in the 924?

(OK, technically it would be a 924S, but we don't know if it is or not)

I'm sure in the past he was asking about any other VAG engines that shared parts, and the general conclusion was the LT35 van.

And I'm sure in the past Chris said it wasn't a 924S, just a simple easy to work on 924.

Agreed, I seem to recall he said at the time "Its the crap one, but its a Porsche and my other car's a 305, and its cheap, so why not :)"

If you think your headlights are a bit yellow and ageing and have tungsten filament bulbs take a look at

Just been reading a buyers guide in PC for the 924, it says the basic 924 engine is the engine from the LT35, exactly the same apart from it's fuel injected rather than carb fed.

You Shagsack!!

Yeah, it's a plain and simple 924 the 2 litre engine.

944 MOT test report:

OSF headlight not working (odd, looks like it's working to me) Rear number plate lights not working Advice - 'Power steering fluid level low' Windscreen washers not working (now fixed by putting some water in. doh!) OSR wheel bearing play Rear brake pads below limit

That's it! I can't quite believe it! This thing's been off the road since some time in early 2003.. It looked good when I saw it - I figured I'd look pretty carefully around the whole car - but the reality hit me when I handed over the cash; there could be all manner of things wrong with it. I'm still pretty surprised just how well it ran straight off the drive - real test will be a good blast down the motorway! Still, I'd budgeted on having to spend a lot more than this to get it roadworthy.

Good work, I think 944s are really good looking cars.

My old porker knowledge is minimal, but i think they're cool, what engine does a 944 have? Is it good :) ? Pics?

Base model engine is a 2.5 4 pot 16v i think? 16 ventiler :-D

I like em too, even the prefacelift ones hide their age well

Thats not bad for one that has been standing a while.

Not bad at all.

Mind you, the s**te old Golf Cabrio only needed a backbox replacing to get an MOT. Shame it broke a few months later. It will be resurrected by the middle of March, when I get a share bonus to pay for it.

2.5 litre for early ones, and not sure for later ones but was it 2.7 or 3 litre? Then there was the turbo options, and I think some where 8 and some 16v (again, a lot of this is "I think").

Had a 924/944 on my maybe list (along with about half the coupes from europe/Japan on the bangernomics borderline couple of grand range).

Yeah.. can't quite decide if I prefer the pre-facelift ones more or not... they do look good though IMO. Only thing I don't like too much are the rear lights - look a bit ugly by today's standards, and probably should have been updated on the facelifted model. The second gen RX-7 had cool rear lights when it went under some slight modifications around 88/89.

My engine is a 2.5 4 cyl 8v.. I think the 944S had the 16v and there were also turbo, 2.7 and 3.0 litre versions. I haven't really given the engine a proper blast yet, but it feels like it's got enough power. If the weather's nice, I'll take some pics tomorrow. Probably about time I took some of the

924 as well..

Yeah, that's the thing. I'm gonna have to put some miles on it and see how it runs. Still, it's a promising start!

Dad in California has a 944 S2, with the 3.0 engine. Convertible, red, as it should be in California.

Here's a shot of either me or Dad (I'm not telling who, heh!) "having a little chat" with some Yosemite Park Rangers...
