Vomit

Just looked up car hire in Aus.

It suggested the Hyundai Getz and Nissan Pulsar. I think I'll hire a pushbike. (Fraser, do you lot travel around American style, where you've got vast distances between everything and no pavements, or is it more like here?)

And no, we're not talking turbocharged 4WD Nissan Sunny...

I hired something cheap from a rent-a-wreck type outfit. Worked for us.

Central city is sort of like here, otherwise American style.

cheers, clive

FFS hire a Holden or an Exploder or Amazon or something sensible. Otherwise they'll think you're a gurl.

When I went to Oklahoma, I was under 25. Three weeks of a Geo Metro (Suzuki Swift) would cost $1,500. So I bought a Buick Regal (ghetto cool!) on eBay for $400 (then bought a Cadillac Eldorado for $300 and sold the Buick).

Insurance wasn't a problem as in the US, the car is insured and anyone can drive - $60 for 6 months with my friend insuring it, and $20 or so for tags due to both cars being classics (I drove the Eldo on temporary plates anyway).

Oh well, save the trip to Aus for when you've grown up.

It's a mix of the two. There is pretty good public transport all over Australia. The big cities are pretty much like big cities everywhere. Get a central hotel and you can walk everywhere. Depending on how long you stay buying a cheap shed to get around in might be the better option. Petrol is

1/2 the price here that it is there.

Or in the immortal words of the onboard computer in that Holden they had on Top Gear when they flicked on the Traction Control....

My brother's 22, and he was out in Oz last Christmas, and he hired something semi-decent. In fact, his birthday's just after Christmas, and it could well have been before then when he hired something, so he'd have only been

  1. I'll ask him what, where, when and how much if you like.

He also got a speeding ticket and something like a 6-month ban from being able to apply for a license in Australia, or certainly Western Australia in any case.

My brother was 21 when he hired something from Avis (hired on about 3 separate occasions when he was out there) - once from an Avis at Perth Airport, once from another Avis, and another time from somewhere else. He had a Holden Commodore, and seems to reckon loads of places hire to under-25s - though you may well have to pay a young driver surcharge (his was around $25/day).

But if it's a big firm like Avis you're hiring from, don't pre-book it from a branch over here, as they apparently won't guarantee you anything 'cos of your age. Do it when you're out there, or at least phone the Aussie branch of where you're likely to be, direct.
