What are late 90's C Class diesels like.

Something like this fine pikey wagon specimen.

Bit smaller than the E class.

As I recall, they're not that quick and not that economical.

Most likely an ex-Asian minicab.

That kind of money would buy a 100k-ish mile 2003 Superb TDI, too.

Your right actually. Seems to be mainly 2002, but not much dearer.

I have a real soft-spot for the Superb these days - much better car than the B6 Passat for the less money.

At one point they were on our car list in 115bhp Elegance Tiptronic spec., and I could have pocketed £75 / month by taking one, too!

Quite a bit smaller than an E-Class, but generally cheaper to run (not just fuel, but insurance, service costs too). As a rule of thumb, the petrols drive okay, the diesels are sluggish. The C220 punts out 95 bhp, the C250

113; 0 - 62 times are just over 16 and 14 respectively and mileage figures are 40.1 for the 2.2 and 39.5 for this 2.5. With no turbocharger they feel very... laid back... torque figures are just 111 and 125 lbsft for these donks.

Good automatics though and if looked after, should be bulletproof. A bit cramped inside but more spacious than the 3-Series. But, it's a 2.5 five cylinder with a slightly lumpy lop sided-ness that I enjoy with the later common rail 2.7 (as Tim Kemp knows, it's my favourite diesel of the E-Class range).

Late 90s and no turbo? Boggle - I know the lower end of eg PSA and VW were doing them, but I thought Merc were supposed to be "premium"...

Me too.

Sommething like that, except for the hideous grille.

"let's take the most obviously Mercedes-Benz aspect of the whole car and bin it, cos we can totally do better than their best effort."

Oh, and the bumper too.

Anyway - mate of mine has had one of that model C class for maybe 8-10 years. He had another before that too. His has needed an injector pump and wings in that time.

It is definitely a nice thing to be in and balance the old comfort / solidity thing quote well.

I would.

Err, the one in the ad is a TD, which is the fairly rare turbo diesel variant. Supposedly that's the one to have by a wide margin.

35mpg.

With diesel priced at a premium, it's just not worth running a diesel on that fuel consumption - a petrol turning in 30mpg is going to be just as cheap to run.

I didn't see the advert and made an assumption that it was the 2.5 na, because as you say, the TD is rare.

Not from the fuel consumption perspective on UK diesel, no it isn't. If, however, one likes diesel or travels through Europe a fair deal, it makes more sense.

'cept that you're not gonna get 30mpg from a petrol 5er.

I'm showing 36mpg over the last 7500 or so miles from my E class. A petrol one is likely to have shown 25mpg, my Volvo averaged under 24.

Depends. I regularly manage 34mpg in my E39 520. Then again, I do seem to be slowly turning into my Dad when it comes to driving style.
