Which is best Renault 5 GT Turbo, Escort RS Turbo, Fiat Punto GT Turbo ?

Some friends are running one of each of these classic 80's turbo hatches, to see which is most expensive to run, or has most problems !!

We are putting loads of info and accounts on the website at

I'd advise them to look at a calendar and double check whether or not the Punto was ever around in the 80s :-)

To be fair, its not called "80's Turbo Money Pit", so I think Punto has every right to be there.

Sure you dont mean Uno Turbo :)

in which case superb :) easy 200 bhp rot box

Renault 5 GTT easy 200 bhp rot box that bits fall off

ERST easy 200 bhp rot box with rattly tappets rot and smokes a lot

Nothing to do with it, she directly inferred it was an 80s turbo hatch. She is wrong and, as such, should be flogged.

As long as it isn't here, anywhere is fine.

I think they should rethink this bit, too:

  1. Two of the fastest and most famously unreliable cars ever built - the Ford Escort RS Turbo, and Renault 5 GT Turbo

IMHO, they're neither that fast or that unreliable - certainly the Ford is slow and not that much less reliable than any other MkIV Escrote.

Hello,

How could the R5 have what you describe as a 12month ticket when it had no reversing light or brake lights? If it hadn't been driven for a while it couldn't have had current MOT or TAX. The MOT people must have been crap if they didn't notice the lights AND the wheel bearing as all those items are checked. Make sure the MOT certificate is not forged. Very worn tyres would also be an MOT failure. Please post the name of the MOT testing station or garage so we can all avoid it !

16v MK2 GTi. Get a decent one and it'll cost f*ck all to run and be as fast as either car...

Yup, it's not the car that's unreliable, it's the owners F***G them up. When I took my car for a MOT, the tester told me that the RST that had arrived in the area at about Xmas had just been killed. Owners girlfriend had brought it in sounding sick. It seems the young lad had used it to learn about the importance of checking the oil level. Having to get an engine exchanged or have one rebuilt is an expensive lesson. (More than the car's worth?)

Because the reversing light is not part of the MOT you imbecile.

Do you think that maybe, just maybe, they were working when it had the MOT ? And that they have since failed ?

The MOT certificate last for 12 months. It does not mean your car is roadworthy for 12 months.

Erm, yes it could.

I don't quite think you've grasped the point there, Doki :)

Don't bother, classic trolling. Mix ignorance and confidence and it burns pretty much anyone up on the inside.

Just kill file him... so I don't have to read it when you reply...

the R5GTT is probably the quickest out of the box, but that's because it's put together with sellotape and cardboard the punto is the best built, but isn't the best looking thing (imho) but seeing as it's the youngest of the trio it should at least be built properly the ERST has the most potential, but it depends on whether you want to invest in the cosworth management to make it run in excess of 280 brake reliably

also it needs to be made aware that both the R5GTT and the ERST have a S1 and S2 version and one is better than the other in terms of reliability but not as good in terms of driving appeal

ok, having read the site it seems that the turbo on the ESRT went poop what was he doing to get that picture I wonder? and when he replaced the clutch, did he get it replaced with an uprated item or just standard? one more thing, when he order the full engine set of hoses why didn't he make sure that the hose he wanted was in the set rather than fork out a few hundred quid and still have to pay ford for the hose?

has buying an escort turning him into a stereotypical Muppet :)

I agree about the RS Turdo being slow, but the 5 GT Turbo was quicker in standard form than a standard Integrale around most race circuits.

Unfortunately, people insist on trying to make the 5 produce silly amounts of power. 130 bhp from a 1.4 wasn't that bad for the 80's..

That's what they do ! My TI did exactly the same thing after a hard run !

(Note : turning the engine off with the Turbo that hot is A VERY BAD THING. If you wanna get out and look, then leave the engine running !)
