YANCHR - Powerful estate.

Yet Another NewCar Help Request.

I finally managed to write-off my Fiat ( :.DDDDDDDDDDDDD) [1]

So, I'm in the market for a car.

I want: ( In order of preference)

2.5L+ petrol injection Big Estate Lots of toys (definitely leccy windows, a sunroof, power steering. ABS) (PREFER: leather, leccy sunroof, air con (maybe), cruise control)

120+bhp - upgradeable to 300bhp+ (reasonably cheaply(5-6 grand)) RWD

5-15 years old Up to 3 grand.

I pretty much had my heart set on a Carlton Diamond 3.0 24V, or a Carlton CDX estate

But: has anyone any thoughts on:

Granada Scorpio 2.8i, or 2.9i (I've heard the engines are very heavy, resulting in performance loss) Sierra 2.8i or 2.9i 4x4 (as above)

*Toyota Camry* Unknown quantity

BMW Tourer Mercedes Tourer

Volvo 760 (SW(thinks)SMBO wants a car with "curves", refuses to entertain any sort of Volvo). Senator 3.0 24V I like these, I could be talked into having one converted to estate by my local coach-builders within my budget

Any other suggestions?

Basically, what I'm after is a sub 10 second 0-60, 130mph+ comfortable shed that will take a EuroPallet with 500kgs on it in the boot. (and still get close to this performance)

"The fastest "hunk-o-junk" in the galsxy"

Insurance isn't really a problem (I hope) - budget of £150 / month ( I have

0yrs noclaims, 3yrs driving exp, age 30+, secure parking, LS10, three points sp30),

Nor is fuel costs (budget of £100 a month for perhaps 1000 miles!) or maintenance (£150 a month budget).

I want something which doesn't look new, or fast, or expensive, and can be serviced at home, (and I don't intend to *_EVER_* buy a different car - I'd rather spend 10 grand fixing the right car than 8 grand on one to "put me on"

It needs to cope with:

driving me 3 miles each way to work every day occasionally delivering a 500kg pallet of stock 400 miles, taking family of 5 on 1000 mile touring weekend around Scotland, towing an 18' "tow-a-van" trailer with maybe (1500kgs on board) (second car) Leaving your average "boy racer" standing at traffic lights, or on a 1/4 mile track day. ( ie, 0-60 sub 10seconds, 15 second 1/4 mile)

On occasion I have to do several of the above, without returning home in the meantime, plus I don't have room for more than two cars (and I already have a LoCost, half built)

Probably a lot to ask, but my old 2L CDi carlton managed OK until chronic engine problems killed her. (cracked block)

Other options would be appreciated

Good lad.

Why ? smaller displacement turbo engine far more powerful, torquey, fuel efficient ( subject to nutter tendencies ) and all round far better to drive.

300bhp from 2500cc NA engine ? good luck. You may achieve it but it'll be undriveable and flat as a witches tit.

So you want to buy a 3k car and spend 6k on making it go quicker ?

500kg ? are you sure ? thats about half the weight of an astra.. which is IMHO transit type loads...

I pulled up next to an E55 AMG Estate at traffic lights this morning.

Hmm, maybe not.

XM 3.0 V6 24 valve estate. 500kg in the back ? Is that all ? Throw another one in, go on...

I'm trying to imagine a shunt at 130mph with a 500kg load in the back. the paramedics would have to scrape him out.

You must have some budget. ;-)

With high mileage, yes, and the most obvious answer to all the criteria, except the RWD bit :-(

Heh, I felt like that the day I finally killed my hated Volvo! (my first car....)

My Uncle used to have a 2.8i saloon, it was dog slow.

Given you don't care about fuel costs, a 540i touring would suit if the load space is big enough.

Don't know what they're like to drive but the old ones are _huge_!

Have you thought about the various Subaru estates as well?

There's an idea - Cossie Transit, with removeable rear seats. :-)

Not too bad, although you'll need the 3.0 V6 to meet your specs, and you'll be lucky to crack 25mpg.

*spits* Yuck, yuck, yuck. Horrible cars. If you are going volvo, spend another £1500 and get a T5.

You're mad, aren't you? Good man.

£100 for 1000 miles equates to about 35mpg

I would suggest stretching to about £4k - £4.5k and going for an Audi A6

2.5TDi (140BHp) estate. It's big, fast, economical, reliable, comfortable and a pretty good drive too. The only way it doesn't match your spec is that it's fwd, but 99.9% of the time you'd never notice.

Legacy Estate...possibly Citroen CX25 GTi Turbo?

Legacy, Yes. Citroen...bigger than an estate in hatch form!

Sorted...

Scooby is 200+ to start with (in turbo form) CX out the box is 168...250 is a chip job

OK...4wd or FWD...failed there...

Going towards the end of the run....

Yup..

Old tech lumps meet fuel injection...not wonderful. 24V Scorpio perhaps... We'll be talking Omega Elites next...

Depreciate quicker than anything else with 4 wheels, so i'm told

For 3k???

As long as the 15 years tag is flexble...but miss the performance part out!

Was there a curvy volvo estate apart from the P1800ES?

Now geting silly... You'll be dreaming for a Lynx Jaguar next (now then....)

Looks like a quadcam Legacy RS for you, my boy...

OK, now we're in Omega territory..!

Anything is an improvement on a 2.0 Carlton (apart from a 1.8)...even an Omega!

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. There aren't all that many about, and I'm looking for one.

Debatable whether it'd fit a pallet in - the width isn't all that great on them.

Lovely cars to drive though.

Change that to 150++bhp if you want a big heavy estate car that's remotely quick. In fact change it to about 170+bhp.

They only did the CDX up to 2.6 (unless you count the old 3 litre 12 valve ones, but find one that hasn't rusted away), and the 2.6s are ok, but not all that quick. Try and get a Diamond 24v, but they're very rare.

I've heard the 2.9s are ok, and nice and torquey, but really not all that quick at all.

Ditto, and Sierras are old sheds - cast your sights higher if you've got best part of £3k to spend (I know you don't have to spend it all though).

Mercs are probably a lot bigger inside than the BMWs, but IMHO the BMWs are much nicer looking cars, and from what I've heard, loads nicer to drive. I reckon your best bet would be a BMW 525 Tourer - quite a few about, don't think all that much generally goes wrong with them, and they've got 192bhp IIRC, and are reasonably good on fuel on a long run (again only from what I've heard - never owned or driven one). Make sure you take a tape measure to check the pallet will fit though - how highly stacked will it be by the way?

Good solidly built cars, but I wouldn't really want one - I'd lke something that looks nice as well as something good mechanically.

Ah! Forget all the other options and go for this one!!!!! Just make sure you check the usual Carlton/Senator places for rust (arches/rear chassis rails)

Don't know how cheap an 850 T5 will be, but...........reading other posts someone else has answered it.

simple trawl the ads for a Scorpio ultima cosworth they may still be making around the £5k mark, but you get everything with it just make sure you change the timing chain pensioners when you buy it and it'll last you almost forever (or at least till the gearbox costs more to sort than the cars worth)
