02 GT Auto question

Is it typical for a newer GT to be able to squeel the tires in second while manual shifting the trans? It was the only newer GT I have driven and wound up buying it. Just wanting to see if it's normal or not.

I have to use my brake to get mine to make even a small peep in first gear. =( (95 v6 auto)

I would hope so. I can burn out to my hearts content in 1st AND on the shift to second, and get a really really nice piece of rubber hammering into

3rd. In first, if I just put the hammer down (not using the clutch) in 1st gear, the whole rear end'll break loose ;-)

Course it's a Mach1 -- and a Cobra is even MORE fun to drive .

Burning rubber/squealing the tires is a bad thing. That means you are losing traction. That means you're losing. Try better tires, lower pressure, or feather the clutch a little. But if you're just having fun, I love the smell of burning rubber. And there's nothing like that sound to bring a smile to your face. Pop the clutch with the revs up in almost any gear and you'll burn a little.

I have an automatic so popping the clutch would be pretty hard. :o)

I was just checking to see if the trans was operating correctly or if I had line pressure issues.

I'd like to ad if you plan to keep the car a long time, it would be a good idea to invest in both a shift kit and auxiliary transmission fluid cooler. The shift kit will lessen time between gears, reducing heat and friction. The only thing is you'd have to get used to a rapid lurch from gear to gear, instead of the usual smooth change. Even if you don't do this, the aux. trans. fluid cooler is an inexpensive investment to prolong your tranny. BTW, when in tip-top tuned condition, my 90 GT will screech in 1st and second, and chirp in 3rd. It has both things I mentioned in this letter, and I plan to upgrade my torque converter. Take care, and happy cruising!
