2001 Mustang V-6 Exhaust

Clear DayI have a 2001 V-6 Mustang Convertible. I've made some modifications to the intake system. It's time to turn my attention to improving the exhaust system. The following list are my options.

  1. Only add a higher flow muffler (Flowmaster, Edelbrock, etc.)

  1. Replace the pipes after the stock exhaust manifold with a cat back system with H-pipe and dual or single exhaust.

  2. Replace the stock manifolds with short headers and finish it with #2 described above.

I understand that long headers are not legal in CA. They eliminate one of the required sensors.

My question is how much performance gain can I expect from each of the stages described. Will stage 1 provide the largest improvement causing the others to offer less bang for the buck?

Appreciate any input.

Thanks,

Professor V

On a fairly stock V6 headers will not provide any gains worth the money.

Your exhaust options are: cut off the y-pipe after the second cats and run seperate pipes back to better flowing mufflers. You can get a GT take-off system fairly cheap & have it installed.

an H-pipe can also be used but not performance necessary since our firing order evenly alternates from each side.

I have an H-pipe but it was free and I added magnaflow mufflers. I think it sounds good. By adding a dual exhaust your torque may more higher in the RPM range.

Actually headers do not eliminate one of the sensors because that would be the front O2 sensor that the EEC uses to monitor combustion.

I hope this helps. Any additional questions let me know. Good luck.
