2006 V6 idle problems

Here's a problem that's been nagging me ever since the car was new. Right now it has about 2500 miles on it. It's a 2006 V6 manual transmission Mustang that has a intermittent idle problem. 2 trips to the dealer have proved fruitless so far - the damn thing never acts up when I get it there. *grumble* I hate intermittents, I'm not too car savvy, but I get 'em all the time as I work in repairing electronics. Symptoms: When out of gear, engine will race up to 2K or so, then rapidly drop off to the point where it almost stalls, then repeat ad-nauseam. Makes shifting a real pain in the ass... I'm assuming that it's acting up when in gear, but it's not especially noticeable then.

Problem seems to occur right from starting the car cold, and will continue all the way to destination - usually to work, about 16 miles or so. It doesn't matter whether the engine is cold or hot. Here's the kicker: if I shut off the engine, then restart it, the problem goes away for the remainder of the ride! The problem is very intermittent, maybe once in every 30 starts or so. Hopefully I've given enough information, but there's something I've left out let me know. If anyone could offer some thoughts on what could be wrong, I'd be most grateful - at this point I'd be willing to try anything.

Thanks.

Well.... I know I've seen in the V6 forums other guys complaining about the same type of problem... unfortunately I don't know if/how they resolved the problem... Let me poke around my favorite forums and see if I can find anything....

2nd to last post is by "Fazm", he is a trusted mechanic and he says:

"i ignored this post because i thought it was already known why it does this. It revs the engine like that to burn off excessive fuel to help lower emissions.

yes its normal, yes its annoying, but oh well"

Thanks for the link John. I did a search a month or so ago and came up empty. I must say that this method of lowering emissions sucks. I wonder why it's so intermittent?

I added my 2 cents to the thread and left a link and quote from 3 other people who were having serious problems with this behavior, and have made consumer complaints at mycarstats.com:

I agree that it sounds like a pretty terrible way to lower emissions... Might have to call my engineer buddies at Ford and harass them!

Other than that, how are you liking the V6 manual transmission ?

I have been considering buying the convertable in the V6 with 5 speed. How is the manual transmission, is it as smooth as a Honda ?

What kind of milage are you getting ?

Thanks, Lynn McGuire

Hi Lynn, I like it just fine. I've never driven a Honda, so I couldn't make a comparison. The only other manual transmission vehicles I've driven are a '86 F150 4x4 and a (*gack*) Ford Fiesta. Not exactly worthy of a comparison either, IYKWIM.

I average 25.8 mpg - all secondary roads, and with an average of 33MPH according to the computer.
