3.8 Engine Headgasket Recall?

Unfortunately it looks my the headgasket on my daughters 1994 Mustang 3.8 has gone.

From what I read it looks like Ford had 2 recalls of which we were never notified.

TSB Number Issue Date TSB Title

00M10 APR 00 Campaign - Head Gasket Replacement

TSB Number Issue Date TSB Title

02-1-4 JAN 02 Engine Head Gasket - Approved Replacement Procedures

The car presently has 140,000 miles on it and I'm not sure if that would matter.

Is there a better way to find out if it's covered desides calling Ford Service directly?

The two items you listed aren't recalls. They are technical service bulletins. They are bulletins from the factory to dealerships on how to handle cetain service situations and how to "officially" correct the problem. They're kind of like a FAQ for the dealer. You'll still pay for the work.

There is no recall unless there's a safety issue. The only issue is that the

3.8 with aluminum heads will usually need headgaskets before those fancy platinum plugs need replacing.

My 95 Deathstar was part of an extended coverage plan, (which my mechanic told me about) and I was reimbursed for the total cost of the replacements including all parts, labor, and machine work. IIRC, the plan extended the headgasket warranty to 7 years, 100k miles, which my van just sneaked under.

I believe the time has lapsed for all further consideration from Ford, and at

140K miles, you did good. My friend's Toyota (head bowed in reverence) needed headgaskets in his V6 at 100K miles which he had to pay for.

"00M10" was NOT a recall. It was an enhanced warranty Ford offered to owners of 1994 and 1995 Mustangs with the 3.8l V6.

It extended the original warranty for just the head gaskets to 7 years or

100,000 miles, which ever came first.

Unfortunately, your 1994 Mustang is around 10 years old now, and certainly that enhanced warranty has expired.

Matter of fact, I would f> Unfortunately it looks my the headgasket on my daughters 1994 Mustang 3.8 has > gone.

Were you registered with Ford as the owner back before May of 2000? Did Ford have your valid address? It was back around then, that Ford send letters to every owner who was registered with them, about the additional warranty being offered.

BTW, as with all warranties, it > From what I read it looks like Ford had 2 recalls of which we were never > notified.

It looks like it wasn't the head gasket after all. The timing case gasket and the bottom of the radiator are leaking very slowly.

I guess my daughter heard "gasket" at the shop and thought "headgasket".

Actually it did. Maybe not this one, but Ford had a recall on this issue and replaced headgaskets that were not causing problems just uet with a new setup consisting of a headgasket and bolts. Pony had it done by the previosu owner. Unfortunately at a dealer who screwed it up ending me up with aticking timebomb that went of last January. :-(

I know that warranty/recall deal has expired. As did the one for the fan...

I do second the motion that when you buy a new or used Mustang, you call the Ford 1-800 service line and register your vehicle. When I did that, Ford informed me of the fan recall and asked me which dealer I would like to take it to so they could send them the paperwork and have the dealer contact me for an appointment. Which the dealer did.

Our 95 went at alittle over 60,000 miles, this was well before the recall so we did them using Fel-Pro headgaskets and bolts and were quite anal about the torque specs. Actually those weren't torque specs but more like degree specs as there is a special tool (Snap-On carries) that you use to take them a certain amount of degrees past an initial torque setting.

And let us not forget the fan which went up in a smoke of glory well before the recall as well, fortunately there was no wiring damage when it had a melt down. We simply swapped out the fan assembly for another.

You got lucky there. One of our members had the fan meltdown and it screwed up half his engine because it melted hoses. Ford picked up a $5K tab for this...
