4.10 or 3.73?

I need to know the pros and cons of the 4.10 compared to 3.73 or 3.55. City and highway driving. Everyone has a different opinion on this subject. I own a 96GT stick 4.6L Vert. I don't want to buy a set of gears to later learn I should of put in a lower or higher set.

I chose 3.73s because they gave the extra jump, but still maintained the fuel economy (HAH.. like these are economical to drive) I won't be going to the track, so 4.10s seemed a bit extreme for my use, mostly highway, and cruising now and then.

If you have friends with cars, see if anyone will let you try theirs out compared to stock. Maybe a local Mustang club..

I'm with you on this Kate. I also went with 3.73 and glad I did instead of the 4.10.

I got 3.73's and they did improve accelleration, but not as much as I was wanting...sorta wished I had gone with 4.10's. With me, before I got the gears, I was all worried about milage. After the first week I had them, I didn't think about milage again. not that much of a drain. If you like acceleration, and the slightest wild with your driving like me, get the

4.10's. 3.73's arent bad tho.

Most of the feedback on our newsgroup and www.stangnet that John mentioned is favoring 3.73 over 4.10 What is best brand name gears to buy? Maybe I should have the installer buy the gears as suggested in another thread I read. What do you think about having a local transmission shop do the gear swap if the price is right? (under $250?) Any better ideas? Just want a good job done by mechanics that have experience changing gears..

Thanks again

In a '96, you don't have near the ability to rev as the '99+ cars, so a 4.10 could be really annoying. I'm sure you've noticed the car seems asthmatic after ~5000 rpms. You'll have a very short usable rpm range. If you plan on headswapping in the future, than 4.10s will pay dividends since it'll pull hard to 6000+ rpms. If not, I'd say go with 3.73s. Neither is going to kill you on the highway, but if you do alot of highway driving, I'd avoid the 4.10s. Me...I've got 4.10s on the bench waiting to go in, but my '96 engine is long gone and replaced with an '02.

FRPP gears come with the shims and crush collar, so no installation kit is necessary. It's a good idea to replace the carrier and pinion bearings while you're in there though. Axle bearings are optional, but also a good idea. And forget the gear. There isn't one for the GT trans to make it right with either the 3.73 or 4.10. You'll need a speedo compensator like a SpeedCal or Abbott ERA. Kate...your trans, being a Cobra, is OK with the 23 tooth gear because the internal gear is different than the GTs.

I second the rebuild for the Traction Lok. Diversified Marketing sells the ring and pinion for $140 and the T-Lok rebuild kit for $40.

. And the girdle is always a good idea. The driveshaft may be necessary. Buy it if your getting vibes after the gear install.

Ditto all that. Damn, you're smart!

Ahhhhhh... I see! The 'kit' that I bought, replaced all the bearings, thank goodness, because the ones that were in the rear end of my car were shot. My jaw dropped a foot when I saw them.

I did put the girdle on at the same time, better the car wears one than me!

Thank to all!!!! Now the hunt is on. I got to find someone to install before buying parts. Maybe they will prefer to buy the parts and mark them up! lol

In all but 1st gear, 4.10s are basically the same as stock gears, but one gear lower. i.e. 1st is now 2nd, 2nd is now 3rd, etc... Obviously this won't make your car any faster once you're in those gears. The only possible advantage of 4.10s is the 1st gear launch, and with any power at all, 1st will be worthlessly low. I have 3.55s, and I can smoke the tires in 2nd. 1st is almost worthless to me now. I can't imagine how worthless it would be with 4.10s. Gearing is such a simple concept. Too many people just go with the more is better philosophy, and end up with a car that is annoying to drive. The only exception might be the old, high-revving Cobras, which I understand were a little torque-challenged.
