'68 Mustang gear shift

I have to rechrome my floor mounted gear shift shaft for a 4 speed transmission - I can see how to disassemble the shifter from the trans and the leather knob from the shaft - but how can you remove the rubber boot from he shaft since the "T" pull handle is in the way. It looks like that handle is on a thin steel rod that is welded or soldered to the handle. Even if I was able to detach it, it seems almost impossible to reattach?

Anyone been here?

If it's the same as the shifter on the T10 tranny, there's a small pressed in roll pin that holds the "T" to the shaft. It shouldn't be that hard if you have the right sized pin punch.

Yes, I moved the T10 between 3 different cars and kept the stock shifter with the "T" lockout each time.

Thanks for your reply - I have looked at my assembly closer and there is no roll pin. It appears there is just a cable that is swaged or soldered to the "T" handle on one end and the interlock protrusion on the other end. Someone told me that my trans is not a T10 but a "toploader". Maybe that is the difference. It is still quite difficult to understand how this could come apart much less ever be reassembled.

Any thoughts anyone?

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing, but, using soapy water you can stretch the boot over the tee reverse lockout. The old one may tear if it is brittle, but a new one will stretch over it.
