88 Mustang runs for a minute then dies and then won't start again HELP!

My 1988 GT convertible died on the freeway a while back (engine quit like someone shut off a light switch... no sputtering... just off). Anyway, I am troubleshooting it and have found that it will run seemingly fine for a minute and then die again. After that, it won't start. If I come back a few hours later, the same thing happens... it will start and run for a minute..then die....and not restart at all.

There is no spark coming from the coil when it won't start.

I have replaced the ignition coil, cap, and rotor and this problem persists. Where else should I look??

Please help!!

Ignition module.

Two primary things I would check

A) Can you hear the fuel pump run for a couple of seconds when the ignition is first turned on ? Repeat this several times to insure the fuel pump is functioning. (on/off/on/off/on/off)

B) Ignition module, these have a somewhat high failure rate and I would replace just for piece of mind.

If the tach bounces when key switched on, but not while cranking, then problem is likely the TFI module or the pickup in the distributor.

If you have had the car for several years and NOT changed or serviced the TFI, it is the likely culprit, esp when you take it off (small tool available at auto parts store) and the grease on its back is hard or cakey.

You MUST remove this and apply fresh dielectric grease... and you can extend TFI life indefinitely by doing this every couple years. Once it dries, the TFI dies.

I agree. I had to replace the TFI Module on my '87 a year ago. When it got hot there was no spark and it obviously wouldn't do anything. No problems since. They put the damn thing on the distributor that is only inches away from the hot engine.
