An SSBC rear disk brake up grade kit, (about $700 from Summit) and a set of

73mm calipers from a Lincoln LSC. (about $180 from NAPA)

How much better are 73mm Pistons -Vs- 60mm Pistons in stopping power ??

FRONT: 73mm calipers from SVO or Lincoln. Better pads. REAR: disc brakes with better pads. GEN: Braided lines. Quality fluid like DoT 4 or Dot 5.1. DO NOT use synthetic fluids.

Check with Disc-Brakes-R-Us for some good prices.

Slotted and drilled rotors are strictly for looks, and will actually decrease braking performance.

Read through web sites for Willwood and Baer for good information on design.

Once the wheels lock up that's about all she wrote regardless of caliper size. The reason for replacing the fronts is if you just replace the rear drums with the SSBC rear disks (Really just Ford Turbo Coupe rear brakes with the necessary parts to make them fit) your stopping power increases but so does your peddle effort, by going to the 73 mm front calipers the peddle effort is reduced to about what it was before.

Actually, the manufacturer claims a 30% increase in stopping power. You're right though most of your stopping power is on the front wheels. It is nice when the rears do their part as well though. I know it made a big difference in the feel of my 88.

In terms of economy, if you are just looking to improve the stopping power of your car an adjustable proportioning valve will do the trick. That way you can adjust the bias of the brakes until they are all pulling their share of the load.
