'91 5.0 and Calif. Smog Check

My son's 5.0 coupe's registration is due this month and requires a smog check. We bought the car 2 years ago so this is the first smog test. It runs well but has always stumbled at idle. We intend to tune it: plugs, cap, rotor and air filter. Engine oil is just changed. We've read about dirt building up in the MAF(?) or Throttle body(?) that causes problems. I'd like to clean it if possible before the test. Any advice on how to accomplish this is appreciated. Also, are there any other tune up items we should look at?

I heard a few things, but don't know for sure since here in Alberta - the last bastion of freedom in Canada - we don't require them. Leaning it out can help, very slightly opening the exhaust somewhere in the line can help, putting a bottle of alcohol in the tank can also help.

Cleaning the MAF, TB and IAC are easy. Just take them apart and spray in the best TB cleaner you can find - 1/2 can while the engine is stopped, 1/2 when it's running (it will stall but will start again). I use a wet Q-tip to gently clean the MAF... works well, and my car runs like new.
