'97 GT axle ratio decoding

Hi folks,

I've Googled for all the axle ratio decoding sites out there, and none of them seem to answer my question. I just bought an incredibly clean '97 GT -

I know the common axle ratios for GTs are 'M' and 'E'. Mine says 'ME' on the door pillar sticker. Does that make it a 2.73 or a

3.27?

Thanks in advance!

my guess is its a typo, or error.

but if you want to know the ratio here is one way to do it.

  1. Jack up both rear wheels off the ground and chock the front tires (for safety).

  1. Place your car in neutral and place a small dot on the aft end of the drive shaft.

  2. Now place a dot on the tire as well. Have someone turn the tire one revolution while you are under the car watching the dot on the rear of the drive shaft. Count the number of turns it make and use the chart below to determine the gear ratio you have.

2-3/4 turns equals 2.73's if it turns more than 3 times its the 3.27

hope that helps

Try looking at the metal tag on the differential cover (I think). It wil have several number fields. Since you have a GT it will have a traction-loc, so look for a number like 3L08 2L73 3L27. At least thats what my distant memory says.

M = 2.73

E = 3.27

That is from the 1996 factory shop manual. (Probable that your '97 is the same)

congrats on your ride

oops just re-read your post

in that case, yes, like drivespy said, the metal tag if intact will specify

peace

I ordered my 97 GT with a 3.27 rear end, the sticker reads:

AXLE LE

It has a manual trans, if that matters.

You got me looking at my door tag after this post and I noticed mine list BM as the axle code. Anyone have any ideas what that one means?
