97 Mustang 3.6L --- Loss of power

Hey guys, this is my first post. I just joined the group today. I was wondering if anyone here could help me with a problem. My 97 mustang (automatic) seems like it has no power. When it is on inclines of about 45 degrees or more the car starts to vibrate. I have had it to two mechanics, but the problem is still there. So i am guessing it is not a trivial problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks alot

It's because you've lost somewhere between 0.2 and 1.2 liters of displacement somehow... ;)

so what could cause something like that...

kidding... right? that's ALL the information you are going to give and you want someone to figure it out on that?

My best guess would be that your piston return springs are weak.

Well what else needs to be said. everything else is fine with the car. The engine runs fine when ideling, down hill, and level. Sounds perfect, no ticking, or knocking, or anything. Does'nt burn any oil. So.... If theres anything else you need to know, just ask.

This is a common problem with this model... you are missing one liter of displacement. Unfortunately, the only recourse is to take it to the Ford dealer. Tell them you have lost some of your displacement, and would like some replacement displacement.

A temporary fix would be to install some new muffler bearings, and check the blinker fluid level, if it's low, that will also cause a problem.

Good Luck!

What exactly is meant by displacement?

blinker fluid level?... as in signal light?

I was also told that it could be either the fuel pump, filter, or transmission... Could this be true.

But it was just TOO GOOD to pass up, and he/she took it hook, line, & sinker.

Ragnork, if you are really that uninformed, you should take it to the dealer. You obviously don't know enough about cars to work on them.

Well i gotta start somewhere... I havent actually planned on doing the work myself. I just want to understand whats going on, so if there is a next time i will know. As you said, im only a yongster learning the tricks of the trade. Well maybe not that young, i am 22, but i am fairly new to car mechanics.

BTW.... what does this mean "...must...keep...from...ROTFLMAO.... "

Oh ya, i braught the car to a transmission guy here, and he says that there is a part inside that needs replacement, and thats whats causing the rumbling and loss of power... So im gonna probably get that done next week sometime. its gonna cost over $700. The car is in really good shape so, i think im gonna get it done.

Time to grab some books and start learning. A Haynes manual (parts store, under $20) will give you some good basics and a much broader understanding of most everything on your car. Read through it.

Make friends with some of the local gearheads that drive Mustangs.

: : : BTW.... what does this mean "...must...keep...from...ROTFLMAO.... : " :

We are giving you a hard time.. the comment means.. .he "had to keep from REALLY pulling your leg any further," and the other means Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off

(David, you WILL pay for this! I swear! If I EVER get the chance I am gonna kick your ass around in circles)

There is no such thing as Muffler Bearings, replacement displacement OR piston return springs.

Please tell me it was something REAL that he is replacing for that kind of money. What was/is he going to replace? Did you get a second estimate? Always a good idea. Avoid being a victim if you don't know what you are doing, some shops will take you for granted. Ask someone that you know who knows something about cars if it sounds right and always get more than one estimate.

By now you must realize how truly nieve you are - and how rotten people can be. Don't let your lack of knowledge make you a sucker.

Oh, what is a ragnork? Sounds like the sound the cat makes when she coughs up a hairball.

Be still my beating heart!

I gotta tell ya, Ragnork, you did it to yourself. When you were first asked to provide details of your problem, you responded:

"Well what else needs to be said. everything else is fine with the car."

Next time you ask for help, provide some specific details other than "loss of power"... What speed does this occur? What RPM? Does it make any specific noises during this episode? Engine hot or cold? What recent service has been done? ..etc..

and you're more likely to get a good response. A smartass response (see yours above) is an open door to be kicked in. Usenet has no mercy.

Well I guess I was told... :)

Leave it to me to be naive, I shant make that mistake again... I didn't expect a smartass response. I took for granted that people would go easy on the noobs, and help em out a bit... Guess not...

Oh well its all good.

If you want more information here it is....

it happens when the car is hot happens at 60km/hr Low RPM of about 1500 no noises

no relevant service done

OK, that's a good start. Now, what made you think it was a transmission problem? A/T or manual? (assuming auto). Check Engine light on?

If so, take it to your friendly AutoZone and they will scan the codes for you. Better yet, take it there anyway and get them to scan for any codes at all. Cars these days are purty smart and can sometimes tell you what's wrong with them.

What did the transmission guy tell you he wanted to fix? Lots of people that read this group are familiar with transmissions.

Does it feel like it's shuddering? (you said no noises). Does it happen while it's shifting?

See where I'm heading with this? The more information you provide, the more likely it is that someone will help you.

Expecting that someone will magically have the answer based on

3 words ("loss of power") is unrealistic.

Also, I would suggest you start a new thread, this time putting in all possible information, even if you think it's not relevant...

"I bought this 1997 Mustang used with xx miles on it. It has x.xL engine, automatic transmission. Just last week it started doing xxxx while driving at 60km/hour. I just had the brakes relined and the transmission fluid changed..."

etc.

Get the picture? Don't put three words in your post and expect someone to read your mind. If you COMPLETELY describe the symptoms you're having, someone is likely to know what the problem might be.

Finally, you better have pretty thick skin if you want to play in Usenet...
