Advice please

Basically I have a choice to make, fix up my 85 GT, which is in pretty bad shape, or buy a 98 Cobra, with 94500 miles on it for 12,100. My GT is the T-top version, and will need complete interior, wheels and tires, all the weatherstriping for starters. The cobra, has a leaking wheel seal, and a minor oil leak, hard to tell if it's the oil filter, valve cover or timing cover that's leaking. Other than that, the Cobra is in mint condition, with no tears inside. I have been having trouble locating parts for my 85, to include wires, carb and interior items that I will need. Especially seats, can't decide what seats to get for it, and basically have been putting money aside for the fix up, but I see now that it will be expensive. If I get the cobra, more than likely, the GT will sit in my yard again, as it did before. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

I think it all comes down to what side of the car hobby you fall into. Are you a driver or a wrench? If you are a driver then I'd say sell the 85 for what you can get and buy the Cobra. However if you like to tinker and don't mind having a car you don't drive that much (at least until its done) then the 85 would be the way to go. I'm a wrench type myself. If there isn't something to fix I'll make something up, and usally regret it later. lol I have almost the opposite problem as yours. I have gotten my 95 GT in too nice of shape (other than the tranny) to really do to much with it so I'm geting bored. Hell I'm thinking of converting it to a 5 speed since my AODE lost drive even though that doesn't make a lot of sence in the long run.

95K is a lot of miles for a Cobra. Those are generally hard miles. At least, it would be if it were my Cobra. Expect in the next 20K miles to start repairing stuff. The big things like motor, trans, diff, will last pretty much forever. But all the little things don't. Like clutch, water pump, starter, ball joints, U-joints, dash switches, etc. It really depends on which car you like best. If it were my '88, I'd probably rebuild it. And use the oppurtunity to make a few changes

- stroker kit, lower gears, etc. More power, better brakes/hendling, etc.

I would go with the Cobra, but find a car in better shape. They are out there. We have Cobra for sale around the corner from me that he wants $16,5 but it only has 16k miles. I would think someone could get him down to $14k easy. then you have no initial maintenance.

The only reason I haven't already bought this car is I am concerned about all the seals leaking once I start flogging it. I have his # if you would like to call on it. Oh, its located in OKC, OK.

Go for the 5-speed and 3.73 gears. I converted my 95GT to a stick several years ago and it was the best thing I could have done for the car (up until I built a 331 for it). IF you're not driving in stop and go traffic all the time (the heavy clutch gets real old) and IF you're not routinely trying to set speed records at the track, you'll love it. If you want a complete list of parts, just holler.

Go for it! All the seals WON'T start leaking at once. Just consider it buying a new car that's perfectly broken in.

I don't know, if I had $12,000 to spend on my car (88GT) it would be an wondrous thing to behold.

And if I had 12 grand to spend on my car, it would remain stock and all my outstanding bills would be paid off. :)
