Air Conditioning overhaul

I just pulled my '85 Mustang GT out of mothballs after 6 years of sitting (was always driving company car). I now remember why I've held on to it-I'm falling in love all over again. Trouble is, of course the air conditioning is gone...I don't think they make R-12 anymore, are there sources out there? Am I going to have to convert my system to R-134a? What's the scoop on A/C for older 'Stangs?

Thanks in advance, Steve Wheaton

After this period of time, you need all new hoses and lines, compressor, and accumulator.

It MAY be that your condensor and evaporator are ok (but i suggest you may want to change the heater core if it's over 10 years old, so you would be wise to put in a new evap, while you have the box out) . Replacements for all these SHOULD be available due to the Mustang's popularity. To be sure, you can go to napaonline.com and check for the parts.

You want the orifice tube and line for 134a.. it's a smaller orifice size for

134.

Make sure you have the latest version of o-rings.. think they are blue.

You can assemble all the parts, per instructions (read compressor directions about oil)

If you flush the evap and condensor of the r-12 mineral oil, you can use the standard PAG oil.. if not use ester base oil as supplied with conversion kit.

I suggest taking it to a good a/c shop to have it properly evacuated and filled. Ask the tech how much 134a it will take... if he tells you the amount shown on the r-12 label on rad support, go elsewhere... 134a should be about 80-85% of the r-12 capacity.

I've converted two r-12 mustangs and a probe and not had any problems.. just as cool after all is done.
